Fourth Annual Saxxies and Arena:Respawn

Oh hey, the Saxxies are here again! Let me blow my trumpet of joy, throw my confetti of happiness and drink my bottle of sarcasm! Yeah, the Fourth Annual Saxxies are here, the contest with the worst drama category since, well, anything with a drama category, complete with a bunch of prizes that no one ever sees and a winner for one category that everyone will hate, probably with some winners being the same as last year.

Alright, I’m just saying that because I’m in a bad mood, but the Saxxies are no longer about killing people and playing TF2, it’s all about trying to make the next End of the Line in less than five minutes. And really, the drama category is always awful. Almost all of them contain the same plot, where X class has lost his fem-class counterpart and either saves them or spends their time moping around like the person who writes this article does when she’s in lots of pain, got high blood sugar, suffering from a migraine and incapable of eating chocolate.

It’s not just that the drama category is awful and anyone who can’t work out how to use SFM (or lacks a computer good enough to run it efficiently) is locked out from entering, even more so since they abandoned the Replays category after only the second year. Seriously, there’s not even an option to submit demos any more. You can do cool stuff with demos and console commands, even if replays were buggy as hell. It’s that the Saxxies have strayed completely and utterly from their roots. This year, there’s also Portal and Left 2 Dead in the mix, which sounds promising, but people always enter non-TF2 stuff anyway. Oh well.

There’s also a dig at both Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: Winter Soldier. I liked those films.

In other news, that new mod for Arena, Arena:Respawn, has been mentioned on the telly! on the News section of the TF2 site. It does sound like a lot of fun, and part of me hopes that Valve will hire these guys and make it all official. Maybe we can get a couple of new maps or something like that. Unfortunately, Valve fails to mention that apart from Arena:Respawn and game modes like Versus Saxton Hale, Arena is completely and utterly dead apart from a couple of ultra hardcore servers.

But they won’t, and the Saxxies will happen and it’ll be depressing and sad, although the Action and Comedy entries are normally very good.

I just wonder, what will happen to the End of the Line update/video? I doubt they’ll be releasing it before, during or closely after the Saxxies, since that would kinda spit in the faces of everyone who entered. Oh well.
