The Gun Mettle Update’s End is Upon Us

So I was idly chatting with Davjo about spaghetti and games yesterday when he mentioned that the current campaigns in CS:GO (Operation: Bloodhound) and Team Fortress 2 (Gun Mettle Campaign) are coming to an end today. This actually caught me by surprise. Had it really been that long? It certainly didn’t feel that long. Has it really been so long since the Vaccinator was made shit again? Clearly so. I’d ignored the whole damn event. A dear friend gifted me a middling Medi Gun, which was lovely of him, but I refused to shell out €6 for a campaign pass… [Continue Reading]

Mixed up Valve Timelines and You

Valve are known for their strange, confusing story telling, with mixed up, confusing timelines. The question that has bothered many is whether our favourite first person shooter series is connected to the other popular first person shooter, the fps storytelling cliff hanger, the puzzle game and the zombie survival game. Are Valve’s games all connected to one another? Sadly, right off the bat, the world of Team Fortress is not connected. The catch up comic starts in the 1800s, predating really any other game. Unless Dota 2 is set in the past, but the variety of magics and technologies, plus… [Continue Reading]

Playing with the Creation Kit

Lately, I’ve been playing a lot of Skyrim. While Medic is still at the Throat of the World contemplating his life and what he should do next (Warning, spoilers – the beginning is here), I’ve been messing around with my second most OP character – Lokmahro, the literal Dragonborn. I say second most overpowered, simply because Medic was really powerful. I didn’t tell you this when I wrote Medic in Skyrim, but I had to redo the Alduin battle because my Syringe Gun killed him in 5 seconds. I wouldn’t mind, I hadn’t even leveled up Archery that much and… [Continue Reading]

Valve Hype: The Long Game

Companies have different ways of generating hype. From the dregs of astro-turfing to the apex of ARGs, there are entire industries dedicated to stirring interest in a product and spreading a social media net as far as possible. Valve is in the lucky position of owning a number of long-standing franchises that have years and years of development time invested into them almost entirely in-house, and this lets them splurge on the most niche level of hype: the hidden foreshadowing. Whether intentionally or for testing/convenience’s sake, Valve has a number of  cases where they’ve added something into a game that seems innocuous… [Continue Reading]

Cute Little Pets

Pets are great, they really are. They can change you and make you soft as, well, soft things. They’re also good stress relievers, and the purrs of a cat are believed by some to have genuine healing properties – they don’t sit there and purr for no reason, you know! After the shitstorm that happened yesterday, I feel this needed to be pointed out. My beloved little Colin, who arrived on our doorstep last year, disappeared for 36 hours, something he’s never done before, but thanks to our calls and my lucky blue straw hat, he turned up again on… [Continue Reading]

New Enemy Added to Payday 2

The FBI Files update is live for Payday 2, and while the new stat-tracking website is amazing on a number of levels, players are mostly excited about the new bad guy who’s entered the battlefield. Captain Winters is the first police unit that comes with a unique name, unless you count Mr. Hyde the ubiquitous security guard from Payday:The Heist. Protected by his shield and surrounded by a phalanx of lookalikes, Cn. Winters summons an unending assault wave that only dissipates if the heisters exit their comfort zone and go kill him. I find this refreshing, because in a cover-based shooter like… [Continue Reading]

Why smart Medics hate the Vita-Saw

Top Medics hate this weapon. This is the one item they DO NOT WANT you to use. Click here to find out more! You won’t regret your decision, which is saving the Ubers of hundreds of Medics as we speak! Do it! Click it! Go on! Yeah, that link doesn’t actually go anywhere, but the hatred is actually somewhat real. Alright, a true Medic main won’t murder you in your sleep if you abuse the Vita-Saw’s unnatural power… Maybe… So why do smart Medics hate this weapon? Normally, when a Medic dies, they lose all their Uber. That’s understandable, the… [Continue Reading]

The Future for Decorated Weapons

Originally I wanted nothing to do with the new decorated weapons. I knew they’d make Valve another fortune of microtransaction money, but you don’t have to be Warren Buffet to realize that. I just thought they looked unanimously stupid, especially when the majority looked like someone plastered wrapping paper on them. Plus the rest of TF2 doesn’t have that scratched scuffed appearance, for the most part the buildings are clean and the weapons will have bright red bloodstains at worse. I’m sure it worked for CS:GO but just wholecloth porting the concept over without alterations seemed as phoned-in as the strange weapons… [Continue Reading]

Scream Fortress has been somewhat cancelled, for good or bad?

There’s been a new blog post over at Team Fortress.com and for some it brings good news, others not so good news. In it, the Team Fortress team explains how they’ve been busy working hard (and watering the potted plant for a change) and they mention some of the up coming things that they are working on. The TF team also explains how, because they’re working on all this new cool stuff, our yearly Halloween event has been cancelled. Scream Fortress has been a bit of a tradition for the last 5 years, starting off with modest Harvest_event and finishing… [Continue Reading]

2fort could be saved, yet somehow we still haven’t managed it

Note: I wrote this on my mobile. You should be impressed. Do you know how many variations of 2fort there are? Tons of them. Far more than any other official map. You don’t see them on the TF2 map workshop because Valve nor us want them there, the workshop is for brand new stuff, not fixes and modifications. Valve will do their modifications in their own time, and you can always sell map stamps with new maps – community fixes are harder to make money from. But you visit tf2maps.net or gamebanana, the 2fort variations will flood you. 2fort night,… [Continue Reading]
