A Very Festive SPUF Event 2

Well, the Very Festive SPUF event, the sequel at least, has been and gone. It involved a bunch of maps, a bunch of changes, me not playing MvM like I wanted and a bunch of other bits and pieces. A random bunch of maps were played, including none of the maps we originally picked out. Apart from Coldfront and Viaduct.

I originally wanted to do a Highlander match like the last Festive SPUF event, but I knew we simply didn’t have the numbers. I considered doing MvM but people didn’t like that idea. So we all kinda ended up just pubbing on the Fast Co. server, as Odoroki’s server couldn’t take the noise maker spam. Not that we really needed it, since everyone kinda stopped spamming noise makers pretty quickly.

A big downside was the distinct lack of festive weapons of any sort. Because everyone was using the Phlogistinator, which is now a stupid as heck weapon. Dodging flame particles at my spiking 200-400 ping is really hard and the Phlog’s unique particles made it even worse.

We started off on Moonshine, on which we mostly dicked around and did aerobics. No, wait, sorry, Mannrobics. That’s a dumb as fuck name. I finally managed to remember how to change map, and I changed it to last year’s first map, Coldfront. Good map, shame the warm version looks like any other temperate map and renders its cold counterpart obsolete. I played Tomislav/Festive Sandvich Heavy. Apart from Medic, Heavy is the only class I have a winter outfit for, kindly gifted to me by Captain Blades.

Viaduct was next and my skill simply plummeted. I ended up being dominated by most of the enemy team, and my time spent playing Medic didn’t help much either. I tried using the Crossbow to get Uber but I could only hit enemies, not allies. Everyone else though was having fun, so that’s cool.

Afterwards, we played Pass_Pinewood, which was not at all snowy, which made me sad. Also that map is laggy and horrible and has missing textures. That purple checkerboard always gives me a headache, so I changed the map after the first round. No one was enjoying the everyone-be-scout-or-phlog-pyro stuff apart from Scouts and Pyros anyway.

I finished on Obscure. I picked the map after someone misled me into thinking it was a snowy map. I was wrong, it’s a fucking stupid map with paths all over the place. And everyone was a Pyro, again with a distinct lack of noise makers. After 20 minutes of back and forth, with me scoring a grand total of 2 points, I gave up and decided to call it quits.

Did I enjoy it? No. I played awfully, couldn’t play Medic most of the time because someone else was playing Medic and I didn’t want to ask them to change and spent the majority of the server time being at the bottom of the scoreboard, unable to do anything except occasionally die by standing on a control point. I did get a double airshot on Davjo but that was sheer luck.

I’m not going to call it a success, what with it being fun for everyone but me. Mostly because 1. I am awful with console commands and 2. there wasn’t enough festive spirit going on. Everyone just used what they wanted because they didn’t have festive weapons. Next event I do (if I do one, I don’t think I will), I’m doing MvM, because then I won’t end up being constantly at the bottom of the scoreboard as a fucking Medic.

Also fuck the Phlogistinator.
