The Daily SPUF is back!

Hi everyone and welcome back to the Daily SPUF!

After a bumpy week or so, the Daily SPUF is working again! Mostly. I still haven’t worked out how to get featured images working again, but they’re not really needed. Pretty much every picture was saved apart from those uploaded in the last week before blog.spuf.info died, and I’ve managed to save a few of those too. But let’s not worry about a few pictures, let’s bask in the glory of this new theme, and the new shiny stuff and the actual logo and things like that!

As you can probably tell, we’ve got a new website. A new theme, on a new server, with new features. I’m going to tell you about all those features, in nice, bite-sized chunks.

Links

I have done my best to change as many links as possible from blog.spuf.info to spuf.org but there is a lot I can’t change. External links will be broken. It’s going to take time for me to edit, for example, all the links on Facebook, and I CAN’T edit links I’ve posted on Reddit. At some point, I’ll arrange for blog.spuf.info to have a wildcard redirect to here, so those links might work one day. For now, if you stumble across a broken link, PLEASE tell me (you can contact us via the About page) and I’ll try and fix it. If you see a link you can fix yourself, please do so. Also, please can you help spread the Daily SPUF around, since we’ve changed domain, our views are going to tank. I’d like SOME people to read this, and I’d like to get back to 300 views a day if possible, like we used to have.

User Accounts

One of the few things I couldn’t save was passwords to your accounts. So what I’ll do is generate new passwords for you, assuming you want them. I’ve set up a nice, handy form for anyone who wants an account, old or new. Great thing is, we can automatically create new accounts now, so you don’t need to message me personally! Progress! If you have an old account, include the username in the form and I’ll make sure you get your old account and your articles back. Accounts are manually approved, so it may take up to 48 hours for me to get them sorted.

Images

Sadly, old featured images are gone. Some of the smaller categories, I’ve gone and added a default image for all of them (mostly the SPUF of Legend, Dear aaby and This Week in TF2 History). I’ve set up a new system that, if you don’t add a featured image, your article will find the first image you’ve attached and use that instead, and this can be overridden with your own featured image later. I will be able to go back and add featured images to most articles in the future, but that means visiting every single article individually.

As for other images, I’ve also set up a system that automatically makes images smaller. Since I’m hosting this personally and I’m a bit crap at this stuff, I don’t want to take up too much space. For that reason, the maximum image size on the Daily SPUF has been reduced to 1024 pixels by 1024 pixels. Because of the way the new blog runs, it’s unlikely we’ll need anything bigger than that anyway. There’s no need to worry about resizing images though, the Daily SPUF does that automatically!

Advertising

The Daily SPUF’s advertising before went to thesupremecommander, to cover server costs. Now that I’m hosting the website, I’ve decided to get rid of adverts for the foreseeable future. This site is being run completely off my back, and I’m not spoiling it with some stupid adverts that pay very little and get blocked by everyone anyway. So yeah, no more adverts! If we ever get a huge number of views every day, I might re-enable them (after all, this all came out of my pocket) but that’s unlikely. I do this because I care, not because I want to make money.

The SPUF of Legend

I’m super busy with a ton of stuff, but I promise I’ll try and get back to our weekly schedule. I do plan to have more than one video a week, our normal video and two lets-plays, me playing Minecraft and the Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, while rambling through both. There will also be more Dragonflight stuff because I love the flying in that game and there’s going to be more levels soon, woo! If you’re very lucky, you’ll be able to watch me fail at Warframe too.

Other Things

If you subscribed to the Daily SPUF via email, I’m sorry, you’re going to have to subscribe again. Sorry about that, they, like passwords, didn’t get saved.

Being my server, things will probably break. tsc knew what he was doing when he set up the Daily SPUF. Me, not so much. So the Daily SPUF may go down occasionally, and for that, I apologise in advance.

I’m still working on a few little ideas, one of which will be a night-time reader that will add a red tint to the page and/or change the page’s colours so you can read more easily at night.

There’s still a few bugs here and there that will be caught and fixed. If you find any, please contact us via the form on our About page.

I think that’s it for now. Thank you for your patience and happy reading!
