Custom Weapons in TF2

While transferring files onto my new computer, I stumbled across some very, very old pictures buried deep in my hard drive, and I found a TF2 weapon idea that I’d made back in 2012. In hindsight it was a terrible concept, but I’d made a model for it and even mailed it in a letter to Valve, so my noob self apparently got pretty invested. And  now I’m inspired to spend an article talking about the custom weapon community in Team Fortress 2, because I am far from alone in that department. TF2 has had a long and thriving modding community that used… [Continue Reading]

A Shout-out to the Warframe Community

I bet regular readers of the Daily SPUF are sick and tired with the flurry of Warframe articles I’ve written lately, but after a game I played the other day, I feel a shoutout is required, to the Warframe Community, which, for a video game with both PVE and PVP experiences, is pretty unique. The game in question was a mission on Venus. In Warframe, you get regular alerts offering various rewards, from rare components to mod-upgrading Endo to large amounts of credits, on top of quests and missions you do normally. They’d all have standard names, like Survival or… [Continue Reading]

Why Does CSGO Purge Perfectly Good Content?

Coming from TF2 and into CSGO, this question has been jarring me a lot. A couple months ago the Operation Wildfire pass went live, bringing some new maps into Valve’s most successful shooter and letting everyone enjoy the work of several community mapmakers. While only Cruise really left a lasting impact on me personally, I still appreciate new content, but it did cause me to wonder what was going to happen to the maps once the Operation ends in a week. So I checked it out and learned that Valve traditionally deletes all the maps from an Operation once it’s over.… [Continue Reading]

On Community Updates

Community updates have always had some sort of sparkle to them. You get a ton of great content-creators gathering and making something as a team. Right now, we have two communities working together on two very different but rather complimentary updates – the Iron Gauntlet, which features Mann VS Machine maps and robotic cosmetics, and the Mayann Project, which is more of an Indiana Jones themed update. Both look very promising and some cool themes behind them. And of course, more Mann VS Machine stuff is always good for me. Thing is though, despite the fact that community updates bring… [Continue Reading]

Consternation and Conversation

When reading through Medic’s summary of the community event ‘A Week of Love and Hate 2’ the last thing I expected to see was my own name being congratulated at the end of it, as well as the promise of a random game and an article about me of all things. I’d only ever entered for the hell of it, as I figured it might be fun tackling the topic of Sniper from both sides considering I love to play as him, but I’m not blind to his dodgy secondary designs nor the fact that he’s a strictly love/hate class… [Continue Reading]

A Week of Love and Hate 2 – Why I love it when others write for the Daily SPUF

Well, a Week of Love and Hate 2 is concluding, and the winner will be announced in a bit. But before we do all that, I’d like to write a little thing on the love side of this little event. When aabicus started writing for the Daily SPUF, I didn’t have much to do with it. I didn’t really write that much, it was just an occasional thing (even though both my first articles were published one after the other). Back then, back in late 2013, SPUF was a much busier forum. SCUD was a new thing and we were… [Continue Reading]

900 Articles of Spufiness – Giveaway

Today is quite a milestone. Yes, we have had milestones for every hundredth article we’ve posted here, but come on! This is the 900th article! That’s surely impressive, don’t you think? The Daily SPUF has kept its promise of being daily and has posted an article every single day for the last 900 days. aabicus and I have made sure of it. In order to celebrate such a vast number of posts, we’re doing a giveaway. It’s only a small one, but I like to think it’s a nice way of saying thanks. Two lucky winners, one from SPUF and… [Continue Reading]

I know you want to surprise us but…

So over in PAYDAY 2, the developers of the game have gone and announced some rather surprising things, namely microtransactions. Overkill kept this all secret and let it all go as a giant day one surprise for Crimefest. It’s sparked outrage in the community, especially since Overkill originally said they’d never introduce microtransactions on multiple occasions. On top of this, awkward silence has ended up killing the dedicated modding community, particularly ones like GoonMod (since everything was against AI enemies, what your gun looked like never bothered anyone) and PD2STATS, a major community-run site, has shutdown. While PAYDAY 2 explodes… [Continue Reading]

The Future of TF2

How’s that for a clickbait title! Let’s commit clickbait suicide and optimistically answer the question right off the bat: Yes, TF2 definitely has a future. Valve has mentioned more than enough pokers in that fire, whether that future is competitive matchmaking, community updates, or something else. I just don’t think it’s going to be the same as what we’ve been getting up to now. It’s not hard to see Valve themselves is updating TF2 less and less. Looking at the history of major updates reveals a parabolic arc where 2011 was the heyday and down the line we get less every year. Valve’s… [Continue Reading]

Pass Time and other update and community stuff

I’m supposed to be working right now, even though I’m supposed to be on holiday too, but oh well. I want to write articles. Work can go fuck itself. Anyway, there’s a TF2 update that’s appeared out of nowhere. Apparently, Valve have been hanging out with with Bad Robot, who do films and stuff, and working with Escalation Studios (some other gaming company), and they’ve basically made TF2 Rugby. I’d call it Football or Soccer, but they are both lame sports. Rugby is what Saxton Hale would play, after ultimate fighting and hockey. This new Pass Time game mode (who… [Continue Reading]
