Synergy In Every Medic Loadout Combination

Medic has very few unlocks, it’s true, but this really is because almost every niche he’d need filled is already in there somewhere. The lion’s share of discussion on this topic is dedicated to his secondary Medigun, but what about his options in primary and melee? Well, for a change of pace I thought I could cover every single available weapon combo in Medic’s Primary/Melee slots, how they synergize, and their viability and effectiveness as a combo. I’m leaving out the bonesaw because it should never be used ever. Crossbow/Amputator: If you’re going to use the Amputator, this is the… [Continue Reading]

In Defense of Nucleus

I frequently play on KotH servers that rotate the stock maps, and I have found that the least popular KotH map that comes up is Nucleus. It seems everyone loves Harvest and Lakeside, find Sawmill and Viaduct tolerable, but they seem to hate Nucleus. I personally cannot figure out why! So why is Nucleus a good map? Lack of Spammability on the Central Point One thing that Viaduct and Sawmill, and to a lesser extent, Harvest, suffer from is the ever-present spam around the final point. Soldiers and Demomen lob rockets, grenades, and stickies onto the point as if they… [Continue Reading]

My response to those who consider the Heavy a boring class

I’m not sure whether this is a prevailing sentiment towards the Heavy as a class, but I get the impression that people more commonly find this class uninteresting to play than any of the others, based on what I’ve witnessed with regards to typical class quantities in a team and remarks from other online players. Some have outright said in retaliation to getting dominated by me that the Heavy is “boring” or “unskillful”, whilst some have questioned me out of genuine curiosity why I enjoy the class when they fervently do not.

In Defense of the Gunslinger

The Gunslinger gets a lot of hate. In fact, if we were to gather all the hate for the Gunslinger, we could probably power a mission to the moon. Actually, that was probably a bad example, as modern calculators have more power than those rockets that went to the moon had, but still, there is so much hate, it can make your head spin. Hours have been spend on SPUF going backwards and forwards, with nothing to show for it apart from a single bug fix. Now, before we start, let’s make this clear: I am not a fan of… [Continue Reading]

A Caber To The Past: Medieval Demo

SPUFblog really likes Medieval Mode. You have plenty of evidence. Even if the gamemode itself is not the most popular one, it is still enough popular that it gets played regularly, and you can pretty much always find a good server where to play (I unluckily can’t say the same for Arena…). And this means you pretty much always have a chance to play the subclass we’re talking about today: The Caberdemo! Or the Handgrenade demo. Caberknight? Democaber? It’s not played that often, and thus people usually just refer to it as “That Demo who is just trying to be annoying”. But the Caberdemo… [Continue Reading]

You Shouldn’t Rely on Glitches

It seems like SPUF is always in two minds when it comes to glitches within our expansive game of TF2. Whether it’s high-fiving someone into the enemy spawn or staying invincible as a Medic, we’ve certainly seen our fair share of bugs that Valve has accidentally exposed over the years. Of course, the latest one on the public mind (but not a recent one, dating back to just after last Halloween when it occurred) was the persistence of Halloween spells on items beyond when they were supposed to expire. This glitch was patched during and after this year’s update, with all… [Continue Reading]

Five Things I Miss From Team Fortress Classic

I loved Team Fortress Classic. While I won’t argue it was more balanced than TF2, or even better then TF2, since I consider the two so different as to be incomparable, I loved it for what it was. It was Team Fortress boiled down to its core: Two teams of dudes shooting each other and working together to fill their teammate’s inherent weaknesses. No cartoony graphics, no multinational band of misfits, just nails and bullets and grenades. And there are some things I really miss from it, things that make me turn the game on and play on bot-choked 2fort/dustbowl… [Continue Reading]

Mangling Cows with Lasers

Everyone and their dog seems to hate the Dr Grordbort weapons, what with their fancy, overly sci-fi look, their overly bright lasers and their overly broken stats and abilities. The Pomson is hated by all but the most stubborn of Engineers. The Phlogistinator is only ever truly considered useful for destroying tanks in Mann VS Machine. The Eureka Effect breaks Arena Mode. And the Third Degree is a direct upgrade. But only one of these weapons has given its name to an illness. Yes, the Cow Mangler 5000. But since it was changed, it’s recovered from its debilitating disease. Almost.

Why the CnD deserves some love

Howdy! First post on the SPUF blog here, and since I noticed a certain lack of Spy posts, here’s one about possibly the most unloved (and probably least mentioned!) weapon in TF2: The Cloak ‘n’ Dagger. At first, it seems like a straight upgrade, but when moving it actually drains cloak faster than you’d think, certainly faster than the Invis Watch, and it refuses to collect ammo. Most people just craft it off or let it be as a keepsake or a Spy weapon to collect, but it’s actually damn useful at times. Here’s why.

An Odd Relationship…

The Heavy Weapons Guy. Often considered the best pocket for newbie Medics. It’s a very strange relationship. Hand the Heavy-Medic connection to strange fans and they’ll do wonders or, more often,  horrific stuff with it. It’s  funny, sometimes, I can’t make a decision on what to write, but most of the time, I find I’m writing stuff because someone’s mentioned it. Or they just want to see me write something from the view of, um, me. Because I’m clearly really that mercenary who goes around healing people, and I’m quite obviously canon. This leads to an odd scenario. People start… [Continue Reading]
