The End of an Era

Well, that’s it. SPUF is dead. It’s gone. Nothing more than an archive. Dead. Done. Kicked the bucket. Pushing up the daisies. Rolled a seven. Gone forever. Poor thing didn’t even die painlessly. It struggled through 503 errors and database problems. It struggled under the requests of people trying to back up the vast number of posts and threads, desperate to archive an ancient forum. It didn’t even get any updates, being stuck on version 3 of vBulletin, despite vBulletin V5 being available for quite a long time now. SPUF died a painful death. Over the last year or so,… [Continue Reading]

Last Goodbyes

Today, Monday the 5th of June 2017, is the day SPUF dies. No one will ever be able to post ever again. Today’s article contains the goodbye notes from various SPUFers throughout the ages, serving as a goodbye to the forum some of us have spent years posting on. For some SPUFers, it was just a place to hang out, for others, it was a source of inspiration, for others still, it was full of advice and nice, community things. Either way, SPUF was a great place and it’s a shame to see it go. “SPUF had a good run… [Continue Reading]

SPUFpowered – A SPUF Away From SPUF

With SPUF’s death, the community has been exploring its options for continuing on some other site. Posters from the Off Topic SPUF section are meeting up on their Steam Group, others are discussing the situation on SCUD and reddit, and we from TF2 have mostly been congregating on r/SPUF, though it’s really intended as more of a temporary “what do we do now” hub while we find a better place. A better place to keep our community going is SPUFpowered, a forum filled with old SPUF regulars who have existed in their shadowy little corner of the internet for years now.… [Continue Reading]

SPUF is Kill

Maybe it’s a false alarm, maybe somebody somewhere hit the wrong button, maybe it’s a late April Fools’ joke. But right now, our beloved Steam User Forums redirects to SCUD. Update: According to Ianskate, SPUF moderator, it’s official, SPUF is gone. This happened extremely recently (I was surfing SPUF a few minutes before it stopped letting me) and it’s something people have kinda maybe vaguely suspected might happen at some point, but not really because Valve has loads of money and there were at least a few thriving communities, such as the TF2, Dota 2, CSGO and Off-Topic forums. SCUD even… [Continue Reading]

Some Article-Writing Standards

Hi everyone! I just thought I’d stop by with some more tips and guidelines for when it comes to writing articles, and how to get them looking nice and neat. As much as we let you write about whatever you want, there is a way missy Medic wants her articles to appear. Of course, I’ve written about this stuff before. But there’s always a few things I miss or change my mind on over the years, and since we have this newish site, I might as well make a new post. Just so you know, most of these… suggestions are… [Continue Reading]

The Daily SPUF Thread Hits 10K Replies!

It’s an achievement 3 years, 3 months and 26 days in the making…the Official Daily SPUF thread just received its 10,000th reply! That’s 1213 days in total, which coincidentally is the name of the first indie adventure game I ever played and highly recommend to any fans of the genre. The 10,000th post came on the 667th page (assuming you’re using the archaic ’15-replies per page’ default setting. It’s 2017! Bump that bad boy up to forty!), just passing the Number of the Beast. This makes the Daily SPUF thread the only current thread in the main SPUfspace with a quintuple-digit reply count,… [Continue Reading]

An Article a Day Keeps the Medic Away

Today is December 24th. Christmas Eve if you’re celebrating. The first day of Macromera if you’re a Rethavok. Either way, hopefully it’s a nice day. Things are cooking, people are excited, it’s all good. What better time than to reflect on, well, stuff. The Daily SPUF is now over three years old, having started way back in 2013, with a handful of articles written by a handful of SPUF denizens. Now, over 1200 articles later, we have come a long way since those humble beginnings. From Blog.Org to WordPress, from server to server, we’re still here. We’ve published an article… [Continue Reading]

An Unexpected Return from the Dead

At about 2am on the 19th of December 2016, something woke up. An old, angry, tired beast who hadn’t been working ever since the 12th of August of that year. This beast was pronounced dead on August 28th, and, after a brief mourning period, was forgotten by everyone but me. I’d regularly go to the beast’s final resting place, hoping that maybe it would wake up or something, but eventually, even I gave up. I’m talking about the old website for the Daily SPUF, blog.spuf.info. Sometime back in August, when I attempted to create a backup for the website, something… [Continue Reading]

The Sensible SPUFer

“Come on, Medic, it’ll be fun!” aabicus tried to convince the busy doctor. “Everyone’s going out trick or treating! Why won’t you?” Medic had been ignoring the gaggle of SPUFers behind him for about an hour now and they still hadn’t got the hint. He was still having flashbacks to last Halloween, when he let his brother borrow his lab coat and an old, broken medi-pack, and won a costume contest. Everyone called him a Ghostbuster. Meanwhile, no one had recognized Medic, wearing a grey suit and a paper mask, and he’d spent the evening protecting his sister from a… [Continue Reading]

Poem Day

According to the billion posts on my Facebook feed from Tearaway Magazine, it’s national poetry day or something. Probably in New Zealand. Really, the only reason I’m linking that is because our former SPUFer and ferocious catsnake Dekky (the guy behind the Phlogisticast and some of the Bionicle articles here) is a writer for Tearaway and he’s a damn good writer himself. Oh and he’s a friend. Anyway, I should probably do some poems or something. But I’m lazy and I generally dislike poetry, so I’m finding poems posted on SPUF about TF2 and are posting them here. Small problem… [Continue Reading]
