Should You Play Palworld?

Before I answer the title of this article, I have to make a confession. I don’t like survival games. I get the appeal, particularly the ADHD alluring gameplay loop of collection and checking off lists. Unfortunately, at the core of survival games is the system I most loathe: crafting. However, I decided to give it a try with the promise of gun toting fowl. In principle, it’s a great idea! Who doesn’t want to create and own a piece of the game world? Going on a quest in Dungeons and Dragons to collect fabled ingredients to forge a blade of… [Continue Reading]

Perennial – A Free Bite-Sized Horror Game Worth Playing

I was originally going to include Perennial in my previous article about short, free, low-poly horror games, but I quickly found I had a lot more to say about this one. Perennial is a free game on itch.io you could go download right now. It was made as part of the Haunted PS1 2018 game jam by a single developer within a month. The player character has returned to their childhood park to spend a nostalgic night under the stars. However, when darkness falls they find a mysterious creature stalking them through the familiar woods. The gameplay consists of navigating the… [Continue Reading]

Dark Spooky Forest Week: ARK Survival Evolved

I had the worst concievable opening experience with ARK Survival Evolved. I was grumpy at unrelated real-life things, so when my boyfriend created a private server and insisted I give the game a fair shake, I was hypercritical about not being able to instantly figure out how anything worked. How do I build a campfire? Why is it different how you gather wood from trees vs berries from bushes? Why’s it so bloody dark at night that I can’t see a damn thing? This game sucks! Flashforward two years later, and I have what feels like a lifetime of stories… [Continue Reading]

Warlock’s Compact Exploration Hut

There are three games that I hold in extremely high regard. As games go, they are my Big 3. Team Fortress 2 is one of them. Ōkami is another. The last one, which I have never once talked about before until now, is Minecraft. I stopped playing Minecraft for a fair bit until the end of last year, and dropped right into 1.14 after stopping at 1.6.4 a couple of years ago. Not that I stopped playing by the time 1.7.2 rolled out, I just stubbornly stuck to 1.6.4 for quite a while. It was a newer and richer world… [Continue Reading]

An Actual Survival Game Mode?

The Survival mode in Warframe is weird. It’s not really a survival game mode. At least in a normal sense. You’re not trying to save yourself from a horde of vicious zombies or ravenous beasts like in most survival modes, you’re just trying to kill enough enemies to pick up more life support capsules. Eventually, you do get overrun, but people have managed to go for hours upon hours with ease, and you used to be able to go on until numbers start overflowing if you used something like Covert Lethality and Ash or Ivara. What I’m trying to say… [Continue Reading]

Playing on Modern Large Minecraft Servers

Back when I actively played Minecraft back in Minecraft 1.7 and before, back when things were more simple and there weren’t zombies and skeletons literally every-fucking-where, the Minecraft servers I used to play on weren’t huge, but they had stable enough communities and regular players. These servers also had a bunch of basic commands, like being able to protect areas, protecting your chests and a multitude of anti-griefing plugins. Eventually though, I stopped playing Minecraft aside from glancing at new versions and playing in single player creative mode. It wasn’t until I started playing Pixelmon that I got into Multiplayer… [Continue Reading]

Tips for Kuva Survival

Kuva Survival is the cool new thing, or at least it will be for a while until the new Sanctuary Assault game mode comes out in an upcoming update. It’s a nice blend between the normal sameness of normal Survival with a hint of Extraction thrown in, with the plus side that you don’t need to grab a billion power cores, you just need one to start extracting Kuva. Here are some tips for going into Kuva Survival, one of the highest outside of the Void and Sortie missions. Bring enemies to you Ideally, you want all the enemies to… [Continue Reading]

On The New Kuva Survival

As soon as the update hit, I knew exactly what would happen. People coming out in droves screaming that this “Kuva in the Kuva Fortress” mission doesn’t give enough Kuva and that it’s not very good and that DE should be ashamed of themselves. That was exactly what happened. That and a few bugs – Kuva not being saved to your inventory at the end of the mission and being unable to farm more Kuva, but I think they’ve been ironed out already. The mission is simple. On Taveuni, the Survival mission on the Kuva Fortress, enemies can now drop… [Continue Reading]

Tricky Survival Worlds in Minecraft

While most people see Minecraft as a place to build amazing creations and pretty buildings, many people also play Minecraft as a survival game. Prior to Minecraft Beta 1.8, there wasn’t much actual survival to do. You used food to heal, you fought enemies, you mined things and that was it. After 1.8 Beta, the Hunger Bar was added to the game (along with tons of other stuff, such as better Zombie AI) to make the game harder. On top of that, we now have Hardcore Mode, which locks a world to the hardest difficulty and either locks the world… [Continue Reading]

Playing Dead Island with Siblings

“Medic, play games with us!” my siblings say. I don’t get asked to play games often. Most of the time, it’s to play some party game, like Gangbeasts, or perhaps the Jackbox Party Packs if there happens to be other people around. Occasionally, we’ll play something else, but it’s often brief, or filled with technical issues. Finally, we’ll properly set foot in a game, and maybe we’ll complete the whole thing. I completed Saints Row 3 for a second time with sister LilSkully and completed Borderlands 2 with brother Smeghead. Dead Island is one such game that the three of… [Continue Reading]
