What if Pyro could Double Jump?

Pyro was always supposed to be the ambush class. He/she/it was supposed to sneak around, much like the Spy, then burn anyone he/she/it comes across, while a Spy aims for high priority targets like Medics and Snipers. That’s fine and all that, but Pyro lacks in multiple departments and often finds him/her/itself being nothing more than an Uber Stopper. Why? Because Pyro lacks mobility and a good, reliable way of getting around. So, what if Pyro could double jump?

Why Pyro of all people? Surely Spy could do with a double jump? Well, I’d love to give Spy some form of advanced mobility too, but Spies aren’t really built for double jumping. It would also completely screw over his backstab mechanics, as any Spy could easily just jump on someone’s head and backstab them that way. Spy would need a complete rework if he were to gain the ability to double jump. He’d also need some muscle or something, but this is best left for another article. Pyro though, there’s much fewer qualms.

You see, as a Pyro, you have some very different forms of mobility currently available. A normal Pyro moves at normal speed – the same as Sniper, Spy and Engineer. Sniper and Engineer are normally very immobile, Engineers remain with their nests and Snipers AFK on the battlements waiting for the perfect shot. Spy has an invisibility watch and disguises, which help him get around. Pyro, who is also meant to be moving around a lot, has two options. He can either use the Detonator or the Scorch Short and use self-damage to propel himself some rather meager (and sometimes unreliable) distances, or he can use the Powerjack to move faster. That’s kinda pretty much it. The Powerjack is a billion times better than any other Pyro melee, surpassing even the Axtinguisher.

While this may feel like enough for some people, it seems off that the third offense class has no reliable form of movement, especially when Scout and Soldier both have stock movement. Soldier doesn’t even need to move that much if he’s on defense or is working as a Medic’s pocket. So really, giving Pyro a double jump would  put him on par with other power classes.

But a double jump would do more for Pyro. He/she/it would finally be able to ambush properly. All those small nooks and crannies that lay strewn across today’s maps could finally be abused by the Pyro. With double jumps, the world would become Pyro’s oyster to burn.

There would have to be some sort of downside though. Pyro can’t be as good as Scout now, can he? Of course not, all those angry Scout mains would murder me more than they do already. Maybe Pyro’s double jumps would be smaller. Then again, Pyro already has a slower movement speed, at the normal 100%.

On the flip side, maybe double jump is too much. Scout already works as a speedy, jumpy ambush class. Pyro has more health and more utility. We really don’t need a second version of Scout.

Maybe we should just give Pyro that 107% movement speed he’s always wanted…
