Little Tiny Tips for Pokemon Go

I’ve been playing Pokemon Go for a year now. I’m sitting quite happily at level 38 with a fine collection of Pokemon and way too many Rayquazas. But there are tons of things I wish I’d known when I first started playing. Little tiny things that I just, well, know now, almost subconsciously. Here’s a list of some of these tips, so you don’t make the same mistakes I did.

Wait Until It Attacks, Then Throw

Catching Legendaries is really hard at first, but you have a better chance of hitting a Pokemon if you throw just as the attack animation ends, as most Pokemon will have a small gap before they can attack or jump again. Unless they’re Mewtwo, who will constantly bitch slap every Pokeball you throw at him.

Save Your Golden Razzberries

They’re fucking useful. You should only be using these on Legendaries and Shinies. Unless it’s a Legendary in a Research breakthrough which is incapable of fleeing. If that’s the case, Pinap that bitch. Also, give Pinaps to shiny Legendaries because they’re guaranteed catches as long as you hit them.

Don’t Bother Chasing After Pokemon in the Wilderness

Unless you know where exact Pokemon spawn locations are, there’s no point going after these Pokemon. There’s no real way to track them down aside from moving away from Pokestops and being lucky. Undiscovered Pokemon on the radar confuse this even more because they show at the top of the radar despite not being the closest Pokemon to you.

Do a Daily Trainer Battle Against Team Leaders

500 stardust is 500 stardust. If you have something like Kyogre or a Stone Edge Tyranitar, you can do the fight against Candela without even looking at the screen. You don’t even need to do the higher levels. But still, you get one reward per day from Team Leader battles so you might as well do it.

Save Your Completed Research Tasks

Research Breakthroughs give good rewards (aside from Flower Crown Eevees) so it’s worth trying to do as many of those as possible. Save a research task that you’ve completed so you always have a task to open the next day. You only need to do one research task a day anyway, so you might as well hold on to some of them.

Lucky Eggs and Star Pieces Work on Everything

And by everything, I mean everything. They even stack with events like special research tasks and double stardust weeks. If you want experience, then make sure to use Lucky Eggs before you become Ultra Friends or Best Friends with someone. You can see how close you are to the next friendship rank by clicking on the line of hearts on another player’s profile in your friends list.

Once You Hit Level 30, All Pokemon You Catch Will Have the Same Stats as Other Level 30 Players

This is important because this means you can catch Pokemon with good IVs, especially if you are with a group during Community Days. This only applies to CP and IVs though, if someone finds a shiny, it doesn’t mean everyone will. You should also check the IVs of any Pokemon you catch, you never know when you might stumble on a good Pokemon.

If You Have an Ultra Friend or Best Friend, Trade Pokemon Before Deleting Them

It may only be one extra candy, but that’s one less rare candy or 1/3 of a Pokemon you have to catch in order to evolve or power something up. When you’re best friends with someone, it only costs 100 stardust or 800 stardust for a special trade, which is recuperated pretty quickly, so why not? Especially if you were only going to delete them anyway.

Stardust is Valuable and Disappears Quick

Seriously, stardust will swiftly vanish as soon as you start. So before you power anything up, ask yourself “Am I going to use this Pokemon?” And then power up that Pokemon anyway if you like it. After all, enjoyment is more important than anything else in a game.

Medic

Medic, also known as Phovos (or occasionally Dr Retvik Von Scribblesalot), writes 50% of all the articles on the Daily SPUF since she doesn't have anything better to do. A dedicated Medic main in Team Fortress 2 and an avid speedster in Warframe, Phovos has the unique skill of writing 500 words about very little in a very short space of time.
