600 Articles of Medicing
Not long ago, I wrote an article on how I’d written over 500 articles on the Daily SPUF. Since then, I haven’t stopped writing, oh no, I’ve been writing more and more and more.
I’ve actually gone straight past the 600 article mark. Turns out, I got distracted with my own writings and forgot to come back to this article and actually write anything of substance. Then again, I don’t actually know what to write or anything. At the same time, I could also mention that we’re closing in flown straight past on the 1300 articles mark. Really though, neither of these milestones are that… amazing. Unless it’s your 1300th birthday or something, that’s impressive.
But according to that 500th article, I’ve written a worryingly large amount of text. The 500th Medic article was written when we were closing in on 1200 articles, yet here we are, skirting on the edge of 1300 articles and here I am, writing about my 600th article. More than my 600th article, in fact. Of course, the last 100 articles we published, they weren’t all mine. My articles tend to make up the bulk of the Pending Review section, where they sit waiting to be published if aabicus or any of our other writers haven’t written anything in a while. Everyone else, aabicus in particular, seems to write in short bursts, followed by a long period of silence before springing back to life. That’s fine though, I can continue writing articles while aabicus makes videos for the SPUF of Legend.
Thing is, even if I hadn’t set a new year’s resolution to write 500 words minimum a day, I’d still be writing articles. This is the DAILY SPUF, not the Weekly SPUF or anything like that. You see, I made a promise to keep this blog daily and I’m damn well going to stick to it. Unfortunately, that didn’t work with my other new year’s resolutions to lose weight and stop being a hateful, antisocial cunt, but it’s working with my 500 words resolution promise at least. If anything, I’ve upped my word counts, I write on average about 750 words a day, often hitting the 1000 mark. This article probably won’t, partially because, to be truthful here, it’s a bit of a rehash of the 500th Medic article, but the thought is there.
Deep down, it’s not really that hard. For me at least. I have a knack for writing bollocks. I always have done. The other day, I found an old notebook from school, filled with stories. I couldn’t type very well then, but I had 3 lessons of English every week and, combined with break times, I would spend my time drawing and writing. And before you say “why weren’t you paying attention during English lessons, you naughty Medic!”, I went to Greek school, the English lessons I had were the equivalent of primary school English. When I started secondary school, I once got carried away and completed a quarter of one of my English exercise books before realising what I had done.
Anyway, back to writing, and in particular, that little knack. There’s no real trick to it, it’s just letting all the words fall out. I think most of it is to do with 1. my constant internal monologue and 2. the voices in my head. I may have converted most of those voices into Phoviverse characters (particularly Retvik and Tenuk, who in their own way represent repressed feelings) but they all still talk and chatter. All I do, particularly with Phoviverse stuff, is write it all down. With Daily SPUF articles, it is a tad harder, but once I have a general idea of what I want to say, the rest just flows naturally.
Being able to type though is a godsend. I don’t type properly, I was never actually taught to touch-type or anything, but I’ve in the mean time evolved my own unique way of typing that uses more than two fingers. I can probably do about 50 words a minute if I put my mind to it, but that’s nothing compared to my sister and her 80 words a minute, and she doesn’t even touch-type either. If there is a skill in this day and age that we all need to get a hang of, it’s the ability to type quickly, whether it’s on a laptop or on a mobile device.
My writing has been a rather life-long thing. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea though, but it’s something I really do recommend. You don’t even need to set yourself targets, like the (rather lax) 500 word minimum we have here at the Daily SPUF. Give it a go, write about anything. And if you do write something cool, we’ll be happy to publish it for you.
In the mean time, I deserve a cake and a good laugh. Yay me.
