2500 Articles?
Have we… have we really just hit 2500 articles? Is this really the 2500th article? Really? I… I don’t believe it. Well, I do believe it because I’ve written this article about the Daily SPUF hitting 2500 articles, but it’s still pretty unbelievable.
I mean, I did a triple take when I saw how many articles we had published. I had to double check and make sure the stats were correct. And then I went and re-installed a plugin that told me how many words have been written on the Daily SPUF, as well as calculating some other statistics which I will use to pad out this article a bit, because there’s not that much to say aside from the fact that we’ve published at least one article a day, every day since some stupid day in August back in 2013, back when aabicus was first running the Daily SPUF. I don’t think aabicus would have expected that he’d end up co-owning a blog over 6 years later, still publishing daily articles.
Then again, I don’t think aabicus would be also running a weirdly named Youtube channel and some of his best content being a guide on how to close a game when your computer is acting up.
My point is, this exact article is the 2500th article and that’s pretty insane. It’s not like there’s a lot of people running things these days. It’s just me, my laptop, the occasional idea thrown at aabicus and the occasional random person who has forgotten their password and decided to write something. Just us and a billion spam accounts posting shitty comments that get instantly marked as spam.
So, while we’re here, let’s have a look at some stats because surely there’s got to be something interesting in 2500 articles, aside from the content of the articles themselves. I should point out that I have read every single article – I kinda have to, what with being the editor on this site, but I’m pretty certain I’ve missed hundreds of typos and things like that.
Anyway, we’ve got nearly 2 million published words on the Daily SPUF, with November 2017 being the month with the most words published (with 34,493 words total, an average of just over 1000 words an article) but December 2013 is the month with the most articles published, with 45 articles in the space of 31 days, but only 600 words average per article. The most words published by one person though is OBVIOUSLY me, but I was insanely surprised to see that I’ve written (and published) over one million words. There are only two other people with word counts over 100,000, and that’s aabicus (nearly 350k words) and Medicinal Warlock (136k words). The longest article though is still An Engineer’s Guide to Engineering by Gamemaster1379.
That probably won’t change because I’m the sort of person who will make one really long article into lots of little articles. If anyone does fancy a challenge though, I will offer a prize (maybe a $5 Steam gift card or something) to the first person who does write a coherent article that’s over 7000 words long. Just remember that anyone can write an article, we even have a whole page about it. And while I normally recommend against writing really long articles, fuck it, if you think you can do over 7000 in a cohesive way, go for it.
No matter how you look at it though, that’s a fuckton of words. Nearly 2 million words are on this blog, all 100% free for you all to read. And it will always be free because I ain’t fucking putting adverts on this website. No fucking way.
And we’re still going. It’ll take us well into 2021, but I swear there will be an article loudly proclaiming that we’ve hit 3000 words. Because, really, 2500 words is a pretty lame milestone. The big 3K is where it’s at.
So yeah, I’ll see you all round at the big 3000th article, some time in late 2021. In the mean time, we’re going to keep on publishing daily articles.
