I Can’t Wait for Crossplay in Warframe

I play a lot of Warframe. According to Steam, I have over 4000 hours in Warframe, way ahead of any other game I play. The only two games that get anywhere close to Warframe are Team Fortress 2 at 1700 hours, and an unknown about of time in Minecraft. However, I’ve only ever played Warframe on PC, since I don’t own any consoles myself. So, when Digital Extremes announced Crossplay for Warframe, I was actually very surprised.

We’ve all wanted Crossplay for years.

At the time of writing, we actually don’t know that much about what Warframe’s Crossplay will entail. At the same time, Destiny 2 got Crossplay the day before I wrote this article. In mainly co-op games, being able to play with as many people as possible is a huge boon, and unites a game’s communities.

However, when it comes to Warframe, the devs never seemed to have much hope when it came to Crossplay. It was a backburner project for ages, always a “maybe one day” than a definite yes or no. Heck, the developers were the same way with Cross-Saves, the ability to use the same account, regardless of what version of Warframe you started on. From the way Digital Extremes previously spoke about crossplay and cross-save, despite players desperately wanting it, it seemed like we’d never get anything that works across PC and consoles.

Tennocon 2021 changed that.

In Tennocon 2021, it was announced that Warframe would be crossplay soon.Right on screen, they showed four players from four different versions of Warframe, each wearing their unique console cosmetics, all gently running though the Plains of Eidolon. We were given a live example of what Crossplay will possibly be like.

For some reason though, I kinda feel like this announcement was, well, not very big. Crossplay wasn’t the main dish, it was the starter for the massive, overpowering flavours of the New War. The live demonstration of the New War and its new characters seemingly blew Crossplay out of the water, to the point that, well, not many people are talking about it.

We’ve seen the proof of concept when it comes to crossplay, so it is definitely coming. However, we currently know very little about crossplay, except for the fact it’s coming “soon”. And we all know how Digital Extremes can be when it comes to release dates and stuff.

We’re getting a mobile version as well!?!

Crossplay also brings something else new to Warframe. Somehow, a mobile version of Warframe will be coming out in the future. Warframe won’t just be on our PCs or consoles, we’ll be able to play it on our phones. I assume we’re going to need a hefty, expensive phone, and that it won’t work at all on my ancient mobile phone, but, well, who knows? Warframe is actually not too heavy a game. Or, rather, older parts of Warframe aren’t too heavy. But a lot of work and optimization has gone into Warframe already, so you never know, Warframe might actually work on more devices than you’d expect.

Either way, all of this is just talk. While we did get a teaser during Tennocon, we have had very little new information since. And we probably won’t get much new information for a while. Especially since the New War is coming out this year…
