Veil Voyages For A Cool Hat

When it comes to what you actually do in Sea of Thieves, a big chunk of the game is unlocking better cosmetics. One of Sea of Thieves’ big draw is actually fashion, where you make yourself as awesome and badass as possible. However, a lot of the better gear is locked behind quests, voyages and more. And many others are locked behind doing the same sort of mission over and over.

But one hat in particular was locked away behind a tedious grind, doing Veil Voyages over and over. And over. Basically, we needed to do 50 of these Veil Voyages, and I was intent on helping the dudes of the Stormcloud in finally finishing this monument achievement, finally unlocking the Servant of the Flame hat.

The Penultimate Voyages

Funnily enough, our last 4 sailings were all pretty calm. We ran into a couple unpainted and non-cooperative players, but everyone sank with ease. In fact, our first few voyages were so quick that I was genuinely surprised. Two of these voyages used the same locations, making things much easier.

There were a few casualties, but not really any of our own. Simply put, if we say “please do not board our ship” and you then try to board our ship, well, we’re going to kill you. Which is what happened during one voyage. It’s not like we didn’t try to warn them either. We used voice and text chat, as well as plenty of time. But no, the guy climbed up the ladder anyway. And he got a face full of boolet from my Blunderbuss. I got an achievement for that.

The Last Voyage

However, it seemed that the Sea of Thieves was not going to let us off that easily. After 4 relatively clean voyages, our fifth and final one was all over the place. We stumbled across not one but TWO aggressive galleons, as well as a couple of sloops that were also pretty aggressive. One galleon was already heading our way as we attempted to start our final voyage, but got distracted by a sloop, while the other appeared a bit later, reaching an outpost just after we’d raised our sales and left. We needed to get moving, and fast.

So we used a magical save point again. Basically, if you do Tall Tales (lore-y stuff), you can save at certain parts of a quest if you need a break. We used a Pirates of the Caribbean save point that led us through a portal and into another realm. After a bit of waiting, we left the PotC area and found ourselves on a new server.

By now though, we were pretty paranoid. So we kept one of us stationed on the boat all the time, to keep an eye out for trouble. Before long though, we finished the first steps, then needed to make our way to the veil storm, to destroy the evil fortresses.

Slightly less repetitive

Thankfully though, this was actually not just the same quest over and over. Because that would have been impossibly boring. What’s nice about these voyages is that, aside from the last part of the bounty, there are multiple different stages which are swapped in and out. For example, one voyage could have you scouring a bunch of sunken ships, while a second voyage might have you fighting some cultist ghosts or something. While the last part of the voyage, destroying the evil forts in the evil tornado, is pretty much always the same, it’s nice how the lead-up to the final battle can change by quite a bit.

We did it in the end

Eventually, we beat the fortress, patched everything up, then instantly made our way to the nearest outpost, so Bacxaber and Fox could buy their new cosmetics. There was much rejoicing, especially as they struck poses, while wearing their new hats.

It’s such a nice, clean hat, and it’s a Reaper hat too. Unfortunately, there’s not much love for Reapers, since they often tend to be PvPers. The hats also look really nice based on our character sizes. Not too big and not too squished either. The colours are also pretty simple, meaning that the Servant of the Flame hat will go with a lot of different get-ups.

“But Medic you didn’t get the hat.”

That is true. I need to do another 30 or so Veil voyages to get my own hat. But you know what I did get? A fuckton of gold. I’m not even close to being a Pirate Legend, but I do have 6 million gold to my name. Which I can now use to buy myself other, just as fancy hats. And you know what’s nice about all of this? We can still do Veil voyages. Because they are one of the best ways of farming for gold. So I’ll get my own Servant of the Flame hat eventually.

In the mean time though, time to spend some money on some nice cosmetics for myself.
