In Which Medic Invites His Readers to Choose His Next Play-through
I’ll be blunt here. I don’t consider myself a real gamer. After all, there are so many classic games that I’ve missed, either via not owning them or never getting round to play them. Quite often, I don’t have the right gaming console, and I don’t want to mess around with emulation. Especially if I don’t already own the game. The way I play, I tend to hyper-fixate on one particular game at a time, with a little Pokemon GO on the side. What I really need is for someone to kick my ass and tell me what to play.
Today, I am giving you readers a chance to decide for me. Lucky you!
But rather than having everyone suggest a ton of games, I’ve instead picked a small list of games for you all to choose from. How do you vote? Just comment what you want me to play here, or post on the Daily SPUF Discord server and @ me. I’ll end voting once I’ve got a nice, big collection of votes to rifle through. So, like, probably a week or two.
Agents of Mayhem
This game is an odd one. Agents of Mayhem is somewhat located within the old Saints Row universe, as some sort of parallel. But it’s not a Saints Row 5, which is what people were expecting at the time. In fact, Agents of Mayhem was so badly advertised that people thought it was an Overwatch clone. As if we needed more than those.
As to what Agents of Mayhem is, it’s a single player shooter that’s loosely related to Saints Row, allows you to switch between a team of three characters and, well, a lot of mayhem is going on. But, frankly, I have no real clue what Agents of Mayhem is like, except for the some Saints Row 3/4 references.
Animal Crossing – New Horizons
I’ve actually played a bit of Animal Crossing, but I never really took it seriously. The main reason I bought the damn game was simply because that was what my siblings were playing. But by the time I started? They’d already moved on to other games.
However, if I am going to play Animal Crossing, I need a fresh start. A completely new island with new inhabitants and a much tidier, better laid out village. Because what I had in my first playthrough was godawful. Didn’t even really get to decorate much either. I need a fresh start anyway since my old game, untouched since about February of this year, is probably more flowers than it is grass and habitable space…
Doom (2016)
No, I haven’t properly played Doom. Unlike aabicus, I’ve only lightly brushed against not just Doom but other games like Quake and the original Team Fortress as well. Aabicus’s most recent writings have been all about the games that shaped shooters even today.
But I don’t really want to step on aabicus’s toes. Which is why I put Doom (2016) here, where I can put my own spin on things. It looks awesome, I like shooting demons and there’s plenty of secrets to find, so it at least should keep me occupied for a bit.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond
Despite beating Pokemon Shield, I still don’t feel like I’ve finished a Pokemon game. Sure, Pokemon Shield was fun, but it was also 3D and not really like the original, older games. Unfortunately, I don’t have any sort of hand-held device, aside from my Switch Lite, but luckily Pokemon Brilliant Diamond is much closer to the nostalgia most other people have when it comes to Pokemon.
This is another I’ll be borrowing off my brother, but he apparently didn’t really like it. Which is odd because one of his favourite Pokemon is Dialga. I suppose this is a try-and-see one.
Temtem
Temtem is Pokemon but not Pokemon. Well, it’s an animal-based roleplaying game where your cute critters fight for you. Honestly, the game looks pretty damn nice. And, as a bonus, I can play it on PC. I don’t really know much about it, but I’ve been meaning to play Temtem for a while, and now I have an excuse to potentially do so.
Team Fortress 2
“Go back and play TF2, you silly person. Since you’re still using Medic as your username.”
No but seriously, if anyone wants to invite me to a TF2 match or whatever, sure, hit me up. There are a lot of new maps I never played, and I also never got around to the reworked Pyro. But fuck me, I am NOT going to play TF2 solo. No way. I want a team mate or two that I can rely on.
However, I will be lenient with this. I’ll probably get around to playing all these games at some point, you’re all more choosing what order I play these games in. And depending on the votes, I might just veto a game if I can’t write much about it. There’s also a chance that someone might gift me a game, which will force me to play it. But that’s unlikely.
I’ll be honest though, I’m going to play one of these games anyway. I’d just like some input from you all. Especially after I accidentally gave you all a month of Pokemon Shield madness…
If I may be frank, I can’t recommend any of these options, as I haven’t experienced them myself – aside from TF2 of course, but I hardly ever launch it for any purpose other than filling my steam wallet these days.
The most I can offer is second-hand opinions, such as “Agents of Mayhem is like a bland mix of Saints Row and Overwatch”, “Doom gud, gun go blam and demon go splat”, and “Pokémon Brilliant Diamond is a lazy and simple recreation of the original without many of the improvements the later Platinum version added”.
The best I could do would be go against your wishes and propose some mildly similar other games I have indeed played and enjoyed, such as Stardew Valley and Prey.
Since I wrote this article, I’ve heard a lot that Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl are not very good. Why is that?
I’m sure you can find more detailed reviews, but the gist of it is what I wrote myself: while the previous Pokémon remakes expanded upon the original games by adding content from the third game in the trio (which is essentially an improved re-release that comes out about two years afterwards) as well as later generations, Brilliant Diamond is little more than a carbon copy of the original, with “improved” graphics that many, myself included, find are lacking the charm of the sprite-based original, to say nothing of the art direction.
Oh that’s unfortunate. I thought there was more than just “better graphics” and I’m assuming they’re bad based off what you said.
Feel free to take a gander at other reviews and gameplay videos for yourself, you don’t have to assume things based on the opinion of a single jaded fan.
I shall have a look.
