Medic Plays Definitely Not A Saints Row Game – Part 0

Does anyone here remember Agents of Mayhem? No? I don’t blame you. Agents of Mayhem is a game made by the same people who made Saints Rows 3 to 4. But it isn’t a Saints Row game. It’s definitely not one. Agents of Mayhem is a whole solo adventure set in another city, not at all related to the Saints Row series.

Except, well, it really looks like a Saints Row game, what with all the familiar purple symbols everywhere.

Anyway, it’d be wrong to judge a game by its cover, so I’ve decided to play Agents of Mayhem, just to see how Saints Row-y this game is. And I’m going to start with the tutorial.

A Weird Intro Mission

The very first mission is to steel the bad guy’s stuff then kill the bad guy, Doctor Babylon. Of course, the bad guy is one of the main bad guys in the whole game, so we obviously won’t be able to kill them.

So I start off playing as Hollywood, who is a pretty standard Team America Fuck Yeah sort of guy. He accidentally blows something up, then we meet with Hardtack who destroys some turrets using a shotgun with almost zero range, and finally we meet Fortune, a chick with fancy pistols. Weirdly, the game starts with all three being separate characters, and you don’t get to the character-swapping gimmick until the boss fight against the big bag.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, this game’s main gimmick is that you choose three characters for a mission, and switch between them as you please. I will unlock more characters later.

Anyway, predictably, the baddie escapes and we all bail from the now exploding evil lair.

The city of Seoul
The city of Seoul

First steps in Seoul, following a ball.

This evil ball escaped from the evil lab, and now we have to catch it. Here, we are introduced to the city of Seoul, where all the open world stuff is. We follow the ball… or rather, I select Hollywood to go chase the ball. Then the ball turns into a giant robot made of evil stuff, and we have a first (or second) boss battle. Its moves are way easier to avoid than Babylon’s attacks were at least.

Interspersed among all of this are various cut scenes. Weirdly, we get both cut scenes made in-game and also these curious 1999-2010 sort of cartoon panels. They’re very much branding themselves as something like the old Justice League and Spiderman TV shows. I like it.

We beat the evil ball boss thing, then fuck around a bit until we set a waypoint and go back to the Agents of Mayhem base. The boss was pretty easy, to be honest.

A Pretty standard introduction

Our base is big and, well, base-y. Floating up in the sky while also being invisible. We’re introduced to the sidekicks who will be providing us with upgrades, and everyone has their own nationality. There’s a weaponsmith called Claymore who is Scottish, our handler who is painfully British, an almost literal gremlin and our boss, who is clearly Russian.

As for me, I stop here, because there’s story missions to do. Or maybe I’ll go roam around Seoul for a bit. Get a feel for the city.
