Playing Sea of Thieves Solo Kinda Sucks

I love Sea of Thieves. It’s a great game where you can actually be a pirate, with no real moral ground to stand on. However, I’ve rarely played the game solo, and tend to avoid playing solo at all costs. Simply put, Sea of Thieves is very hostile for the single solo player.

Too much for me to handle

There is simply too much for one person to effectively do. Especially if you’re a newbie. I don’t want to call myself a newbie, but I am, my experience is very spread out. But there’s a ton of things to do. If you want to play solo, you need to juggle being at the helm, getting your sails sorted out, shooting enemies with cannons and stopping your ship from sinking. Sometimes all at once.

Actually, quite a lot all at once. While you can just set off in a direction, there’s still threats, like megalodons and krakens and skeleton ships that will still cause problems. Thankfully you can just run away from some threats.

Krakens are horrible

As an aside, I fucking hate krakens. Somehow, every single time I play solo, I run into a kraken. I have the worst luck when it comes to just sailing. Although my directional skills have improved, I find there’s fuck all I can do when a kraken attacks. Shoot it with cannons? The cannons have limited reach, so I kinda have to wait for the kraken to line itself up. I could shoot it with my pistol or rifle but they both seem to do fuck all.

And while all this is happening, I have to repair holes in the ship too. Juggling tasks is one problem, but it’s even worse when you can get sucked up off your ship and there’s very little you can do about it.

Streamers only manage playing solo because they’re well-protected.

Well, it’s also that streamers also have a ton of practice. But still, most of the streamers I see have someone with them, and the solo streamers generally have help from elsewhere. Then again, a streamer can always claim that other players are stream-sniping, using the player’s stream against them. There’s a really easy solution to that though, and it’s called setting a delay. Most streams generally have a bit of a delay anyway, but a delay will make it far, far more difficult even to stream snipe.

Either way, a streamer playing solo is a lot better than a normal person playing solo. Mostly because…

… It’s boring

The worst thing though is that playing solo is boring. It’s tedious. It’s not fun. There are always massive journeys between landmarks and where you need to go, and sailing on your own requires making your own entertainment to pass the time. Normally, even with just one other player, you can at least have a nice chat as you sail. Heck, even the silent presence of another person is better than actual silence. I just find it so weird and confusing, sailing on my own, constantly checking the map and keeping on track.

Honestly, the reason I hate playing solo isn’t just because I suck. It’s because I get lonely. Really, really lonely. Especially when on a sloop.
