5 Reasons Why You Should Try Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2 is an amazing game. Ever since it released in late 2007, it’s been chugging along, bringing with it a huge amount of playability, lore and memes. Even if you’ve never played the game, the media surrounding Team Fortress 2 is enough to lure in curious players. The game has a large footstep in the PC game community, and also has a ton of great memes. In this article, I explain why you should try Team Fortress 2, a pretty ancient and unique video game.
It’s free to play
Ever since the Uber update back in 2012, Team Fortress 2 has been free to play. Being a F2Per does have some downsides, but it still lets you get right into the heart of the game. The default weapons you get as a F2Per are plenty strong enough to get the job done, and you can unlock weapons pretty simply via random drops or by completing achievements.
Becoming a premium player though is pretty easy, you just need to buy something from the Mann Co. store. Buy a key or something, just don’t buy the weapons, because you can get those for free via the aforementioned random drops and achievements.
The characters are great
Each of the nine mercenaries have their own unique personalities, quite unlike other games. Seriously, these guys are great. From the soft-spoken Texan Engineer, to the loud and obnoxious Scout to the definitely evil Medic, each character stands out as their own person. Just watch the Meet the Team videos and you can see how insane and enjoyable the TF2 mercenaries are.
Gameplay is mostly fair (aside from random crits)
What’s nice about Team Fortress 2’s gameplay is that, on the surface, the game is very simple. If you are good at FPS games, then you should be fine playing Team Fortress 2. While yes, it’s a class-based shooter, each class is easy to learn but hard to master. Even simpler classes like Soldier have a lot of little tricks they can pull off. But mostly, Team Fortress 2’s gameplay is pretty balanced, and has a bit of a rock-paper-scissors feel to it.
(However, a cheating bot can fuck things up, but currently, bots aren’t too bad. And community servers are almost always bot-free.)
TF2 is part of history
After so many years, Team Fortress 2 is still standing strong. It’s outlived a huge number of competitors, and continues to be among the top most-played games on Steam. Team Fortress 2 also has as massive media footprint, with so, so much content still being made by a game that was released in 2007. The memes alone are amazing. This game has given us all sorts of things, from the general idea of class-based shooters, to cosmetics, to making lootboxes popular. At the very least, play a game of Dustbowl or 2fort, maps that have been hanging around since the dawn of the game, and are still played today.
There’s nothing to lose
The biggest reason though is that you have nothing to lose. It doesn’t matter if your team loses, you can jump into another game. If you are bored of a match that’s gone on for too long, you can leave the match and join another. Whether your team wins or loses, you don’t have to worry about things like season passes or detailed stats or anything like that. You can just move on to the next match, or back out and try another game mode.
Seriously, TF2 is a great game, and I recommend you try it at least once. If you do and it turns out that you don’t like Team Fortress 2, that’s absolutely fine, but at least you got to play a little piece of video game history. There’s a reason why this game has survived for so long!
