Sizable Surprises Was a Fun Event But It Could Have Been More Fun

I love XXL and XXS Pokemon. I find them cute. XXL versions of massive Pokemon and XXS versions of tiny Pokemon are even better. And that is kinda what Sizable Surprises, a recent Pokemon GO event, did. It gave increased chances to get XXL and XXS Pokemon, as well as spawning a bunch of Pokemon known for being big or small. But that was kinda just it. Sure, there were increased chances to get a shiny Wailmer, but the event overall was kinda lacking.

Really, I think the biggest problem was the spawns. The spawns weren’t bad but they were kinda lacking. We got Joltik and Cutiefly as small spawns and Wailmer as big spawns, with Diglet, Wimpod, Onix and a handful of others thrown in, but that was just about it. It was mostly just an excuse to make some progress on the XXL and XXS medals, which require 500 of each to get Platinum for. Sure, we had Kartana (a very small Pokemon) and Celesteela (a very big Pokemon) in Legendary Raids, but they were split via northern and southern hemispheres and they SHOULD have switched over halfway through, but they didn’t. People in the southern hemisphere shouldn’t have missed out, because Kartana is way, way better than Celesteela, but at the same time, I did kinda want a chance at getting shiny Celesteela. Due to the vastly fewer players, things like Pokeraid and Pokegenie, which allow people to host remote raids, were basically useless.

But yeah we needed more spawns, and every spawn should have had the increased XXL/XXS chances, not just event spawns. Sure, not everyone wants to see a random Lilipup alongside event spawns, but if that Lilipup had the chance of being XXS or something, that’d still be both neat and thematic. Heck, we could have had something for Cosmog/Cosmoem, which are some of the tiniest Pokemon around (seriously, go make Cosmoem your buddy and see for yourself!), tiny Pokemon like Bounsweet were nowhere to be seen (even though DIGLET of all things was?) and shiny Nymble should have been reintroduced after it briefly appeared and disappeared again. We also should have had Magikarp and Rattata spawning. There are two medals directly tied to catching giant Magikarps and tiny Rattatas, and this would have been the perfect opportunity to have both of them spawning in the wild. It matches the theme of the event so why not?

What pisses me off though is that both Cutiefly and Wimpod were then reused in the Bug Out event that followed after the Sizeable Surprises event.

Also, annoyingly, the increased XXL and XXS chances were turned off for the Bagon Classic Community Day. I would have loved a chance at getting more giant and tiny Bagons, and it would have made showcases even more interesting.

Finally, we should have had more showcases in general. Both big and small. Instead, we only got two types of showcase, for biggest Wailmer and biggest Tynamo. It would have been cool to have a Biggest Pokemon Overall and a Smallest Pokemon Overall showcase, so I’d get to use my XXL Wailord or something. But at the same time, I’d liked to have seen Smallest Pokemon showcases in general, because we still haven’t had any yet – every single showcase so far has been for a Biggest Pokemon.

I mean, the event was fun, but, yet again, it could have been better.
