A Really, Really Weird Sea of Thieves Collab
Sea of Thieves has done a few crossovers over the years. Both Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island make sense for crossovers, as they are pirate-themed. There’s a few smaller collabs, like the Halo crossover (which I think was a Microsoft promotional thing) and, as far as I was concerned, Borderlands was probably the weirdest collaboration, even though I’ve never, ever seen anyone use the ship set. I suppose, at least, the Vault Hunters in Borderlands are kinda pirate-like, looking for a vault full of treasure and stuff. It kinda makes some sense. Most of the time though, these collaborations and crossovers are mostly just a ship set and nothing more.
So when my best buddy Bacxaber showed me a video of a collab between Sea of Thieves and Destiny 2 of all things, I didn’t quite believe that it was real. Turns out, it was.
I don’t get it. Sure, there was, like, one season maybe, with some pirate bad guys in it? The Fallen/Eliksni are kinda pirate-y? But this collaboration, named Lightbearer, is genuinely real. And actually has a LOT of stuff in it.
Surprisingly a lot of stuff. Most collaborations are generally just a costume, a weapon skin or two and a ship set, but the Destiny 2 crossover is weirdly large. There’s not just a generic Destiny themed ship, there’s actually four ships: the main Destiny 2 ship and one for each of the three classes, all with matching figureheads. There’s also a costume based on Destiny 2’s Drifter, and that comes with an emote that copies Drifter’s coin-flicking trick. We also have skins for most of the weapon types, and the Eye of Reach has a skin that looks like the Whisper of the Worm, a very popular and iconic sniper rifle from Destiny 2.
Very annoyingly though, this was a chance to get an actually yellow ship. After all, yellow eagles are one of the main symbols for Warlocks, and the armour you wake up in is white and yellow. So do Warlocks get a yellow ship? No, they get a green ship with yellow bits on it. The Warlock ship set actually looks like a generic Gold Hoarder ship, the only real difference is that they use yellow instead of gold. Why the fuck can I not just get a yellow ship that is just yellow and black or yellow and white? I swear, almost all the ship sails and hulls that have yellow have yellow as a secondary colour at best, and half of them, the main colour is green.
The worst thing about all of this? I have a ship called Lightbearer’s Pride. Everyone’s going to think it’s a Destiny 2 reference now. Sure, I’ll explain the actual reference as I sink other people (and do a not-awful impression of Captain Briggsy telling people I’m disappointed in them) but that’s annoying. The whole showcase of items is called Lightbearer, people will think I’m a Destiny 2 fan with my brig’s name. No, I named my ship Lightbearer’s Pride ages ago. I’m surprised they went with Lightbearer and not Guardian, since most folks don’t really use the term Lightbearer in-game, most people refer to you as a Guardian.
(Admittedly, Lightbearer’s Pride is based on the code name and/or stage name of one of my Phoviverse MK5 characters, namely Retvik (not the same as on-fire MK4 Retvik). But Retvik is a 2.5m tall armoured reptilian monster who used to work as a gladiator, and he wears shiny white and gold armour on top of the armour attached to his body. But he doesn’t have Destiny-style light powers that have 10 year long cool downs. He’s just a chill guy with a good heart who occasionally makes little motes of light dance around him. Kinda like an unusual effect.)
As for the price of it all? It’s pretty standard. There’s a full collection for 4999 coins (about $50) but you can buy most of the parts individually. So if you just want the Warlock set (why would you when the Hunter and Titan ones are way cooler), you can do that. And, funnily enough, the price for the entire bundle is about the same as two armour sets in Destiny 2. And, theoretically, you can get the entire bundle for free if you play enough seasons and kill enough ancient coin skeletons.
Still, this is a really weird and random collaboration. Doubly because Guardians would probably frown upon pirates and, well, would probably also murder them.
