Little things you didn’t notice

The world of Team Fortress 2 is a huge place. There’s rocks, weapons and hats everywhere. No matter where you look, you find little tidbits that are vaguely interesting, and they’re not always hats or something, just parts of the landscape that we’ve just not noticed. Let’s have a look at a couple of maps…

Missing?
Missing?

You remember that comic, Meet the Director, right? Well, in the comic, it seems that he was killed and literally no one cared. That’s not true, someone cares! In the spawn room for Mannworks, there’s a pin-board with a poster of notes and letters, and one of the pieces of paper asks if “you’ve seen this man”. It’s the Director from Meet the Director. They won’t find him though. These boards appear on multiple maps, generally in spawn rooms. Also in Mannworks, when you spawn, turn around and look though that window behind you. Look closely. Can you see that arm? If not, here it is.

That was one unlucky Spy...

All the other Mann VS Machine maps contain interesting stuff. Everyone’s seen the banana peel by those grinders on Mannhattan, but not everyone’s noticed those coloured shovels in the main spawn room. Some people think these are related to some sort of ARG, but like most random items, it’s probably a red herring.

The coloured shovels. Part of a ridiculous ARG or just a false alarm?

There’s also a train in Mannhattan but it doesn’t kill you like the nasty trains on Well and Freight. That’s probably because it’s outside the playable area.

Choo choo!

Doomsday is one of those maps that most people hate, but it’s something we’ve covered here on the Daily SPUF a few times. The map was released before the Mann VS Machine update as a new game mode, then abandoned, despite having a plot and all sorts. The idea of the game mode was good, but everyone hated the easily-infested-with-mini-sentries map. Because it was so easily forgotten, few noticed the neat little miniature locker for a certain little now-sadly-deceased monkeynaut.

Poor monkey...

Another thing you might have noticed on Doomsday is what happened when one team wins. Have you seen where that rocket goes? It actually flies towards the side of the losing team, before falling out of the sky into the team-coloured buildings in the distance in a glorious explosion. Well, glorious, as long as you’re not the monkey inside.

Let’s finish off with a trip to Coal Town. It’s so nice having a whole miniature view of the map in the spawn room. In fact, why not take the time to have a look around, as both spawn rooms are filled with interesting stuff. You can actually lob projectiles down the gaps in the mineshaft spawn room.

I almost wish it included little robots running around inside it.
