In Which SilverWolf Writes Articles

A while back I wrote a piece showcasing some of my favorite articles MedicinalWarlock has contributed to the blog. I originally accidentally included the dm_duel article in that list before noticing that SilverWolf had written it! Just like Warlock, SilverWolf is one of our most frequent contributors, and he’s written enough articles that left a lasting impression on me that I wanted to take the time to pay them some lip service. Like I mentioned in the comments section when this article was first released, dm_duel holds a special place in my heart as well. Back in the early days, when… [Continue Reading]

A Tribute to Half Life 2’s Male07 Civilian

Gordon Freeman encounters a lot of different people when he emerges from his mysterious sleep to find himself in an alien-occupied Earth in Half-Life 2. Assetwise, Valve used a handful of models to represent these civilians and Resistance members. But why is male07 far and away the most popular civilian among the Half-Life community? With his thin beard, widow’s peak, bald spot, and a dash of the real-life poser’s handsomeness, male07 is in all respects and purposes an average character model. The first fan project to give male07 special treatment was the fancomic Concerned: The Half-Life and Death of Gordon Frohman. Author Christopher C.… [Continue Reading]

Happy Jump Day!

For the last four years September 16th has been Jump Day, a somber holiday where the denizens of SPUF honor the 8-clip Sticky Jumper which was cruelly nerfed on September 16th, 2013. (Last year even reddit got involved!) We will never forget our fallen comrade. A weapon of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; it hath carried me through the sky a thousand times, and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is. A harmless weapon that once stood proudly among the few Demoman unlocks, a weapon that has seen its abilities gutted slowly but surely, a weapon whom Valve later updated… [Continue Reading]

Great Moments in Left 4 Dead 2 Speedruns

PCI Gaming has released a new speedrun! They’re one of my favorite L4D2 channels on YouTube and you should definitely check it out. (Keep an eye out for yours truly, who appears at 2:54!) While recently PCI Gaming have been releasing 4-person speedruns of the default maps, they first made a name for themselves through their solo speedruns, where a single player blitzed through the map without allies or even bots. (Which was why they appeared in my video discussing L4D2 soloers). In honor of their new video I thought I could dedicate an article to my favorite moments from… [Continue Reading]

In Which Medicinal Warlock Writes Articles

For our 1600th post, Medicinal Warlock looked back at some of his favorite articles on our blog. It was a great little compilation of articles, but he didn’t include any of his own. Since he’s one of our most prolific contributors, I thought I’d highlight–in no particular order–some of my personal favorites of the many articles he’s submitted to the Daily SPUF! This is my favorite of the articles Warlock has written about the TF2 cosmetics because it covers a lot of interesting ground about the cosmetic’s real-life counterpart and ties the hat into the history of Team Fortress 2. I… [Continue Reading]

Army Gals Poker DLC Review

Yesterday Army Gals came out with a new DLC where the four main characters play strip poker! Considering I complained about the lack of a dynamic poker game in my review of the base visual novel, I had little choice but to try this new content to see how it fared. My expectations going into the DLC were pretty lenient. I wasn’t expecting Deep Blue levels of expertise from the AI, to be honest I mostly just wanted to see what would happen when you played strip poker without the corresponding off-Steam patch that allowed nudity. Basically, turns out each… [Continue Reading]

Competitive Overwatch: Going For Gold

If you were to check out the videos on my YouTube channel, the GIFs on my Gfycat account, or my screenshots in various Daily SPUF articles, you would notice that I’ve been stuck squarely in gold for the entirety of my competitive Overwatch career. On occasion I’m able to pull things together and drag myself into low platinum, especially back in Season 2 where Blizzard’s misbegotten bell curve strategy ensured that 70% of players were in plat, but it’s not long before I either settle back down or a new season starts and subtracts 500 SR for reasons I understand but intensely… [Continue Reading]

5 Of My Favorite Free-to-Play Nude Mods

Warning! Censored images of naked people (and one bunny) in this article. Turn back if you’re at work! Also assume that any links are to NSFW sites. It’s an article about nudity, so we’re warning you now. There ARE naked people here. Turn away if you don’t like that. Do you like nude mods? I like nude mods. But up till now, the only free-to-play game I’ve covered in my articles is the nude mod for Star Trek Online. This time I wanted to write about other games you can play right now without spending any money. Star Wars: The… [Continue Reading]

Left 4 Dead: The Birth of a Genre

Left 4 Dead was a great game. It had the perfect mix of arcadey action and strategic gameplay to entice shooter fans of every skill level, while also having amazing writing and atmosphere that really sold the survival horror aesthetic. Sure, it wasn’t the first 4-player coop (Yahtzee even griped in his Left 4 Dead 2 review about how commonplace those sorts of games were), but it carved a niche for itself that is so prevalent nowadays that I’d call an entire subsection of Co-op horde shooters “Left 4 Dead clones”. Left 4 Dead famously came into existence when the… [Continue Reading]

On Gold Weapons

Humans love to customize things. We want to leave our mark on the items that mean the most to us, and as a warrior culture we especially love to own weapons that have unique, stylized decals. In the programmed world of video games, where one need not worry about firearm maintenance or practicality, the sky is the limit for how many ways we can customize our guns. So why do so many developers immediately go for golden guns? When available (and they seem to be available in almost every game with weapon skins), a golden reskin will almost always have… [Continue Reading]
