Art Time with Medic – How to draw a Pyro
Hello, peeps! Today, as you can see from all the slightly creepy pictures, we will be drawing a simple Pyro. You can use pretty much any art program to do this, you don’t need to shell out for a legitimate copy of Photoshop (although Adobe doesn’t deserve money for what they did with the CS collection) or anything. MS paint isn’t very nice, but there are loads of free or cheap tools. My better-artist-than-me sister recommends PaintTool Sai.
Anyway, let’s get started!
Start off with two circles. They’re the eyes. Normally I’d do a rough sketch of how the body would look but oh well. Don’t do the circles too round and make one slightly thinner than the other.
Draw a head-like shape around the circles, then draw another circle inside each circle.
Draw Pyro’s ‘snout’. I’ve always seen it as a snout for some reason.
Fill in the rest of the head. There’s a filter on one side and I’ve made the eyes slightly more ‘3D’ by adding lines in the inside of the inside circle and outside the outside circle.
Let’s start with the body. I’ve done a rough shape of the shoulders and the chest. It’s best to work your way down. I tweaked the head a bit because it was annoying me. You’ll probably have to tweak things as you go along. Nothing wrong with using a rubber. Or an eraser, huehue.
Time to expand a bit! Extend the arms a bit and draw in those charming little straps and that belt. We’ll do more of the details later.
Let’s move on to those hands. Remember, TF2 classes have stupidly large hands. Like, really huge. Remember that Pyro has gloves with a stripe on them. I’ve actually done those gloves really badly, but never mind.
Time for the legs. Pyro’s legs are really just oddly shaped sausages. The feet are easier than they look, since it’s basically a rectangle on top of a weird, exaggerated foot shape. Don’t forget that Pyro’s crotch hangs really low, another common theme in the TF2 art style.
I added a couple of creases here for Pyro’s trousers. You can add other crease marks by the armpit and on the inside elbow area. And in the crotch. But most of the creases would be in the trousers. Don’t go over the top though.
Now for the finishing touches. The grenade band always goes last since it sits on top of everything else. Once you’ve done that, you can colour him in!
