Poem Day

According to the billion posts on my Facebook feed from Tearaway Magazine, it’s national poetry day or something. Probably in New Zealand. Really, the only reason I’m linking that is because our former SPUFer and ferocious catsnake Dekky (the guy behind the Phlogisticast and some of the Bionicle articles here) is a writer for Tearaway and he’s a damn good writer himself. Oh and he’s a friend.

Anyway, I should probably do some poems or something. But I’m lazy and I generally dislike poetry, so I’m finding poems posted on SPUF about TF2 and are posting them here. Small problem though, the Daily SPUF has sucked up a lot of SPUF’s writing. The last non-Daily SPUF contest we had was Write Some Moar! 3 by Argeon. I miss him.

Write Some Moar! though is where this amazing little poem comes from. That’s basically my whole life right there. When it comes to poetry, it’s the short ones that count. But really my opinions on poetry were tainted by doing Greek literature at school and pretty much every single damn poem we did was a gigantic metaphor for the suffering of the Greeks. The only hint of foreign literature we had was the Little Prince by some French guy.

Really, the easiest sort of poem, certainly the most common form of poetry on SPUF, is the Haiku. It’s just really simple and easy to churn out three short lines. Again, never really found the appeal for them.

Of course, this isn’t really a worthy article if I don’t mention Gruntilda_, the rhyming grumpy witch who posts semi-occasionally over on SPUF. Unlike me, Gruntilda_ is much, much more dedicated to sticking to their rhyming gimmick, even if it means using the odd iffy rhyme or two. Still miles better than Zecora though, who was supposed to be a rhyming zebra but disappeared. Probably out of shame because Gruntilda_’s rhymes were better.

But, in my opinion at least, Gruntilda_’s best piece of art is this, another entry for Write Some Moar! and perfectly suited to them.

Really though, poetry is alright. It’s an art form that’s so varied and insane and wide open that literally anyone can go and write a poem. And that’s what we’ve done occasionally on SPUF. We even have an entire article on a single poem here, called Medic oh Medic Please Rescue Me.

I will finish this off with a poem though, like I said I would. Be warned, my poetry is bad. Just because I’m a good writer, doesn’t mean I’m a good poet.

If you’re angry about Team Fortress 2
Then the Daily SPUF is a place for you.
If you hate those horrible random crits,
And hit detection gives you the (verbal) shits.
If you’re bemused by incompetence,
Of things not making any sense,
The Daily SPUF is here to help,
To rant, ramble, shout and yelp.
And even if you’re not,
Or there’s an idea you forgot,
Come to the Daily SPUF anyway,
Where we post articles every day!

Anyway, happy poem day or whatever the hell it’s supposed to be.
