A Chat About Some Fancy Wings

Star Days is over. With its disappearance, you’ll no longer be able to buy stuff from Ticker’s special shop. While most of it is just cosmetics, we’ll also be unable to get the Snipetron blueprint for a while. But the biggest thing that’s disappearing is the Eros Wings Ephemera. You know, the wings that tons of people are currently wearing.

These wings however are… a little bit controversial. For a large variety of reasons. And I think it’s worth having a closer look at these fancy wings.

The wings aren’t actually bad, just out of place.

I don’t want to say the Eros Wings are bad. They’re actually a really nicely designed pair of wings. I’m not really a fan of how they don’t hold dark colours well. Not too sure about the energy effects either. But the Eros Wings are definitely high up on the chart of coolness. If you could buy a pair of wings in any other game, they’d actually fit quite well.

The Eros Wings are nothing like other Ephemeras.

Like, not even close. I thought the Crania Ephemera was big and bulky, but the Eros Wings blow them out of the water. Early Ephemeras are actually very simple and faint. The step-based Ephemeras are only noticeable while moving around, and Fae Path is similar. Even the Vengeful Ephemeras are pretty low-key, depending on who you use them on. With dark energy colours, some aren’t noticeable at all.

And then you have a massive fuck-off pair of wings, right in the same tab as Shocking Step and Vengeful Shockwave.

They’re nothing like Wing Syandanas either.

Funnily enough, we actually have a multitude of different wing types, all in the form of Syandanas. Sure, the majority of these are Tennogen, but there’s still a handful of normal ones too. However, the Eros Wings are larger than pretty much all of them! Even wings like the Night Hunter Syandana are considered small compared to the Eros Wings.

What’s more curious though is that the Eros Wings are just generic angelic wings. Every other wing-like addition we’ve had is clearly stylized in some way. The Naberus armour attachments are made in a Tenno style, as are the Tennogen Syandanas Praxis, Arcturus and Naru. Meanwhile, the Icarius Syandana is clearly Corpus-styled and the Night Hunter Syandana is Infested-themed. The Eros wings Ephemera though could easily be thrown into most other games without any real stylistic changes.

Most people probably have these wings now.

Out of all the items in Ticker’s shop, aside from the Eros Arrow (a cosmetic from previous years), the Eros Wings were among the cheapest items. Which means they were easy to get for pretty much everyone. And that means pretty much everyone will be wearing them. And from what I’ve seen? There’s pretty much a pair of wings in every mission.

Thankfully, I don’t see them remaining popular forever. Because the Eros Wings, while pretty, do get in the way. In missions, they’re not too bad, since they go transparent. But with lower Fields of View and in non-combat areas (e.g. relays and your ship), they really do take up a lot of your screen. Eventually, people will move on and go back to their old styles once they grow tired of the wings.

But the very existence of the Eros Wings begs a new question: what large, lavish and in-your-face cosmetics will we get next? Because the Eros Wings certainly won’t be the last of this trend. And people really love their big, shiny, easy-to-get cosmetic items…
