Poor Emboar – Tepig Community Day

I’m going to be honest. Somehow, I completely forgot about Tepig Community Day. I was under the impression it’d be next week. But no, I was wrong, and July 3rd was Tepig Day.

There’s a few… pros and cons around here.

A couple of Tepigs
A couple of Tepigs

Everything about this event feels nerfed.

Okay, I get it, there are few Pokemon as interesting as Gible. That day was great. Unfortunately, Tepig just doesn’t have much weight about it. So, even before we start, expectations are lower.

But even the spawns and incense felt nerfed. Normally, when a Community Day starts, you get a huge explosion of Pokemon. But for Tepig. that didn’t really happen. And I hadn’t even caught any Pokemon. Incense however also felt slower. I don’t know if it actually was, but I did feel like it took longer to spawn Pokemon. Still, at least incense still works. The incense spawning changes are actually apparently going to revert to the old ways soon though. So, really, I should make the most of it while I can.

Not even the $1 research was safe. The $1 research was identical to the Gible research, just with Tepig rewards and some new flavour text.

At least we had triple stardust for this community day. Stardust is so insanely useful. Even better though, Sunny is a common weather type, so we could get even more stardust.

It’s not amazing anywhere, really.

The really sad thing is that Emboar is either a side grade or downgrade to most other fire starters. Emboar’s stats are similar to the other starters, but it does have some odd moves. Either way, we already have a LOT of Pokemon with Blast Burn. Charizard and Blaziken are considered the better ones, but Typhlosion also does pretty well. Emboar is just about equal to them, but if you already have a ton of fire types, then you don’t need six Emboard either.

Charizard and Blaziken go one step further though and have Mega Evolutions. And Charizard has a Gigantamax form too.

But even then, all the Blast Burn starters are actually inferior to Reshiram by a long way. And Reshiram doesn’t even have its signature move yet. What’s even more concerning though is that Reshiram may also have a thing with Kyurem in the future too.

Since Emboar lacks a gimmick of its own, it will always be seen as inferior.

I feel bad, kinda.

Not many people like the Tepig line. I think Tepig is cute but its evolutions are kinda weird. The Pokemon has a stigma of being a second fire and fighting type, when we’ve already had one. And since Blaziken 1. looks way cooler and 2. has a mega evolution, you can easily see why Emboar gets left behind.

Tepig does get bonus points for being a cool shiny though. And, shiny-wise, Emboar looks much nicer than Blaziken.

Really, I think the only reason people are playing are because of an easy shiny, and the x3 stardust. And they always seem to bring back the x3 stardust when they have a somewhat unpopular Pokemon with a community day.

Poor Emboar. He was already beaten before he was even released. I suppose at least Emboar will get along with Conkelduur, who suffered a similar fate.
