Holding Off Evolving Starters

At the start of March, we got a nice Pokemon GO update. The next season was revealed to be the season of Alola. And with it, a bunch of Alolan Pokemon got their debuts in Pokemon GO. The Pokemon in question? Mostly the starter Pokemon from the Alola region, as well as your basic common bird and rat Pokemon. However, while it is tempting to get the new Pokedex entries and evolve the starters straight away, it might be worth waiting for a bit. Why? Because starter Pokemon are always strong candidates for Community Days.

Starter Pokemon are always a little bit special. After all, they are who you choose to go on adventures with. Well, they are in the main series games, which are all about battling and exploring. In Pokemon GO, starter Pokemon are still beloved, but a lot of them… To put it nicely, we tend to only like Pokemon with high IVs or are shiny. Unless the first starter you find has amazing IVs, you’ll most likely be deleting it for candy and backpack space.

As with most evolved Starter Pokemon, these three will probably have the potential to learn Frenzy Plant, Hydro Cannon and Blast Burn, so evolving now would cost you an Elite TM later on. Considering how hard it is to get an Elite TM, if you really want one of these guys, I’d just recommend evolving one for the Pokedex. Sure, you can get an Elite TM via the GO Battle League, but we all know how annoying that can be. And you have to wait for each season of the GO Battle League to finish.

That being said, a potential Community Day might be quite far away. It certainly was a long time away with both the Gen 5 and Gen 6 starters. And we could potentially get a shiny starter before its Community Day, the way Snivy did. Heck, long time favourite Froakie still hasn’t had its Community Day (at least, as of writing), and, due to popularity, that will almost certainly be a large event.

Either way, there will certainly be a special move for these starters at some point. But the question is, will all these starters end up with the same moves? Or will the Alolan starters end up with a different special move? Going back to Froakie for a moment, Greninja has not just a special move but a whole special form, separate from all other starters. On top of that, the Alola region is also the home to Z-Moves, which are basically one-use attacks with lots of STAB damage.

Maybe I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. These Pokemon have just been released. We might not see any change until more Alolan Pokemon are released. And we certainly won’t be seeing a Community Day for these three, any time soon. What with the fact that we’re getting yet another damn Kanto Pokemon for March’s Community day, I think we can all happily assume that the Alolan starters will be hanging around for a bit before they get their special moves.
