Fight or Flee in the Sea of Thieves

The Sea of Thieves is just that: a sea of thieves. We’re all pirates roaming across a special, pirate-only part of the sea, trying to make ourselves as rich and powerful as possible. But not everyone has the same ideas in Sea of Thieves. Some people just want to be overly friendly and look for treasure. Others prefer the more standard pirate life, which involves murder and pillaging anyone they see. What makes people stand out though is how they deal with conflict.

Fighting or Fleeing

The question is, do you stay and fight and hold your ground, or do you sail away as fast as you can? It’s easy to find yourself in a fight, especially if you aren’t using an Allegiance flag. Just by looking, you can get an idea of how safe another ship is, but being attacked is always a risk. And, of course, if you attack first, you’d better follow through. It’s cowardly to attack and then run away.

Honestly, in my opinion? You should always try and fight back. Even if you are running away. I’ve noticed that a lot of people try to run away, only for us to catch up with them and kill them anyway. All it does is slow things down.

Then again, people forget that we’re pirates.

There’s no code to follow, no real rules (aside from normal game stuff). We’re free to do as we please.

Some people however complain about being attacked. They claim it’s not fair that we kill them. But that’s kinda what pirates are supposed to do. Screw everyone else and become rich, kill anyone who gets in your way. And Sea of Thieves does that in a really good way. There’s a ton of different factions and people can earn money in multiple ways. One of those ways is by hunting down ships, sinking them and stealing their loot.

I mean, we have a PvP faction. The Reapers are a group that hunt down other emissaries. Even better, you can SEE Reapers marked on the main map, so if you don’t want to do PvP stuff, you can just go to different places. I don’t really get the lore reasons behind why we are after other people’s flags, but oh well. They sell for a very pretty penny, especially rank 5 flags.

Either way though, PvP is a core part of Sea of Thieves, so you should always be vigilant and look out for enemy ships.

There is one exception though.

The Sea of Thieves is a beautiful-looking game, and sometimes you do just want to take some nice screenshots. Having a map solely for the creation of media and screenshots would be a great idea. It would work similarly to Warframe’s Captura mode. You won’t be able to steal anything or make any gold, and there would be zero NPCs, but the whole world would be available in order to take screenshots and make short animations.

However, outside of that, I think it’s still better to keep the Sea of Thieves as a purely PvPvE experience. Because this is a pirate game, and pirates like to loot, steal and kill each other. It’d be weird if we were all just… friends.

Plus, some people deserve to get looted.
