What If There Was A 5+ Ship in Sea of Thieves?

One of the downsides of Sea of Thieves is that it’s a sea. A wide open space with the odd ship bobbing on it. Normally, you’ll get like 4-6 ships in a single server, and it’s quite possible to spend all day sailing and only run into one other ship. At the same time, that one other ship you see is probably a coward running away from you, making things feel a whole lot emptier. Even running into the odd galleon that wants to murder you can also seem pretty empty once either you or the galleon has sunk.

The problem though is that we don’t get many mass-player fights. Most fights I see are sloops versus whatever, and large ship battles are insanely rare.

It would be hell to steer

Well, it would be a bit harder to steer, compared to a galleon. The ship would be a tad slower too, only being faster with wind in its sails. Really, mobility on this XL ship would be a tad annoying, often needing to do anchor turns. I’m not sure how the harpoons would work, but you would have more of them.

Getting through small rocks and sand banks would definitely be a pain in the ass, but you would essentially trade speed and mobility for sheer fire power.

The bulkiest of bulky ships

Of course, a higher player ship would be harder to sink. Just like galleons, you would need to make holes on the bottom level first, to actually start making the ship take on water. However, this XL ship wouldn’t be much bigger than a galleon. You’d mostly just end up making more unwanted, empty space. In fact, we hardly need to do much at all, because the galleon is pretty much perfect for five players. Think about it, galleons have four pairs of cannons, but with a captain steering, one pair of cannons ends up being unused.

Then again, if we’re looking at ships with 5-6 players on them, these ships would be incredibly tanky. With a team of 5 or 6, you can have multiple people below deck, working hard to patch up holes. While also having more people on cannons. So while the XL ship would be bigger, it wouldn’t need to be tanky. The tankiness would instead come from having more people available to do repairs and bucket the ship. Just like the galleon, the ballast cannonball would be its scariest enemy.

It would need its own server

Really though, running into a massive ship as a sloop or brig would be wildly unfair. Heck, Galleons would probably struggle too. So these massive 5-6 player ships should be restricted to specific servers, on their own.

I don’t see a problem for this though. A 5-6 player ship enables playersto get a lot of stuff done as a public group, and such a ship would be amazing for people with more than three friends.

The best thing about a separate area for larger ships though is that you can recreate that movie scene where the toffs’ ship gets blown to smithereens, and we see the captain walking down his ship, being cannonballed from both side. Just imagine that on a daily basis…
