DeMarco – The Lost Son of the so-called Pirate Lord
I don’t normally dig too deep into Sea of Thieves lore. The reason I’m even on the Sea of Thieves is because of treasure and guilt-free murder. But there is some background lore going on, and as we rush into season 8, things are really heating up. So, in order to keep up, I’ve been kinda looking at the lore and, well, it’s kinda sad.
The basic premise of the Sea of Thieves is that a guy called Ramsey called himself the Pirate Lord, and he uses some artifacts to keep the Sea of Thieves separate from both the rest of the planet and the Sea of the Damned. Because of people like Ramsey and the ferryman, us pirates can continue going back and forth from being dead and alive. Ramsey himself is a ghost, half alive, half dead, completely green and glowing. He’s had several ship and trashed a few of them, and he also has a couple of kids. It’s actually these kids that I want to talk about.
So Ramsey has two kids. Lesedi and DeMarco. The sister/brother duo used to run the old Sea Dogs arena, where pvp combat would take place. It was mostly a capture the flag game, with tough rules for being sunk. Like any PvP arena thing, it was incredibly toxic, and the whole thing was shut down by the developers. The characters however used to hang around and still had dialogue.
Then one day, DeMarco disappeared. He turned up some time later, stuck on an island, very much on the dead side of things. As in, he had properly kicked the bucket, rather turning into a ghost like Ramsey did. The island of DeMarco’s death was (re)named Sea Dogs Rest, and DeMarco’s death was shrouded in mystery.
However, back at home, members of the Sea Dogs commented on DeMarco’s death. As did Lesedi, who was pretty upset. A lot of people spoke about DeMarco’s death, especially since he was actually, properly dead. After all, this was the famed son of the Pirate Lord, of course people would talk. Well, everyone spoke, apart from Ramsey. The Pirate Lord had nothing to say on his own son’s death.
Apparently, his death was partly due to DeMarco looking to leave the Sea of Thieves. DeMarco was part of a plan to make peace with the Sirens. Which is kinda an odd thing to do because DeMarco, unlike his dad, can’t breathe underwater. DeMarco wanted to go and make a new life for himself instead. So the Siren Queen got pissed off then manipulated a few red herrings, like stamping the word GUILTY all over the Pirate Lord’s office, then killed DeMarco.
But that doesn’t make any sense. We killed the Siren Queen in a tall tale. She was dead. She’s also bound to the sea and can’t really go on land, even if she was alive. Something about the whole situation seems very fishy (excuse the pun). After all, DeMarco’s corpse is found on an island, but surely the Siren Queen would drown him or something, rather than leave him propped up next to a tree on a beach. After all, she has a plan to capture Lesedi and nearly succeeds in killing her too. The Siren Queen however is killed again, this time by Ramsey actually getting off his fat ass for once and dropping a massive rock on the Siren Queen.
However, at least to me, the Siren Queen seems like another red herring. Apparently her plan all along was to make people no longer trust Ramsey and the title of the Pirate Lord, and accusing Ramsey of killing his son was the first big step in the Siren Queen’s plan. But what about after that? Surely the Siren Queen would know that Ramsey would retaliate against her in some way, doubly so if she’s trying to paint the Pirate Lord as the murderer and also had his daughter imprisoned. Really, if the Pirate Lord had acted more quickly, it’s possible that some of this could have been avoided.
In DeMarco’s journals, there was talk of him leaving the Sea of Thieves, and there are plenty of people who won’t want that to happen. His father included. Lesedi is still looking to find her brother’s soul, and isn’t having much luck, while the Pirate Lord hasn’t been looking that hard. At the very least, DeMarco’s death does fall on the shoulders of his father, even if he didn’t directly kill him.
This has all turned into a weird ramble. But no matter what, I can’t help but feel that something is still wrong here. Red herrings piled on top of red herrings, and nothing else. Either way, DeMarco is dead, and even if the whole “murder mystery” thing is over, it leaves a bitter, unfinished taste in my mouth.
Poor DeMarco.
