A Farewell to 2023

2023 has been a year, and it’s now over. Like most years, a lot has happened. But let’s focus on some positive things. Like all the apps I use that are screaming at me to review what I’ve done this year. I’m mostly looking at you, Spotify, stop judging me. You too, Steam. Google Play Store on the other hand probably has nothing to say apart from the fact that I’ve played too much Pokemon GO.

Speaking of which, despite what Steam says, Pokemon GO has been my most-played game this year. Mostly because I have needed the exercise. Although it’s gotten colder now, I actually managed to lose some weight between August and November, thanks to how much I’ve been walking around. Despite the problems I’ve been having with it (no, it’s not my phone, I get the same random problems on both my devices), I’d probably say that Pokemon GO is my game of the year.

That being said, I have played only ONE new game this year, and it was  CatTails, a stupid RPG game that my ex recommended and I bought, thinking it was multiplayer. No, it wasn’t. I should have gotten a refund, but it only cost me 75 cents at the time. The game was released in 2017 as well. I haven’t bought a game released in 2023 at all. The newest game I bought was Risk of Rain 2 and that was released in… 2020? Fuck me, that was a long fucking time ago.

Still, good game. I do recommend Risk of Rain 2. I find it’s a bit more dynamic than Risk of Rain 1 or Risk of Rain Returns, due to being 3d and being able to aim in more directions than left or right. As to what else I’ve played, well, apparently I’ve only played 12 games total, and 87% of that was either Warframe or Sea of Thieves. Skyrim, Saints Rows 2 and 3, Destiny 2, Team Fortress 2, Golf with your Friends, Castle Crashers and Tabletop Simulator and the aforementioned CatTails game are the only other games I’ve played. Which is apparently well above the Steam median of 4.

My music collection hasn’t been much more varied. While my top song wasn’t Ghosts of Void again, Warframe and Sea of Thieves both dominated the charts, with We Shall Sail Together being my most-played song, followed by Godhunter by Aviators, surprisingly, What The Peephole Say by QOTSA, The Vengeful One by Disturbed and Sleeping in the Cold Below taking 4th place. I’m surprised by the appearance of What The Peephole Say because I didn’t really like In Times New Roman, QOTSA’s latest album, but somehow that song sneaked in to 3rd place.

Nintendo offered me a look into my gaming year for 2023, but I know it’s going to say I’ve played 5 games. I know because I can name all of them: Animal Crossing, Pokemon Shield, Pokemon Violet, Pokemon Home and Warframe. And, frankly, Animal Crossing was a waste of my fucking time. I only got it because my siblings asked me to play it with them, then they all stopped playing once I wasted €300 on the damn thing.

But this year has been pretty good for gaming. I think. We got Baldurs’ Gate 3, which looks like an excellent game and I really want it. There were other games too, but I kinda didn’t really care much for anything released this year. Not much interests me these days, especially when I have a dying laptop that’s struggling with Warframe.

Anyway, how was your year? Hopefully better than mine! And, also anyway, it’s time to look forward to 2024, where we’ll be celebrating the 4000th article very shortly…
