How to Not Join an Alliance in the Sea of Thieves Part 2

Out of all the articles I thought I’d need to write a part 2 for, this article, about how not to join an alliance, is definitely not one of them. I thought that the initial article was actually nice and clear, but no, turns out, there are other ways to not join an alliance. A few of which I recently experienced. So, somehow, here are more ways on how you can not join an alliance.

Don’t try and immediately keg your ally.

If you want to join an alliance, then you should try not to harm them in any way. That includes not using kegs. It also involves not instantly betraying them. Once you join an alliance, generally you just go your separate ways and earn gold. But one crew we allied with, they sailed off briefly before immediately going a 180 and charging directly into us while holding multiple stronghold kegs. Luckily, I’d had a funny feeling about this crew and had decided to keep an eye on them, and we managed to neutralize the threat before they could even get close to us. We watched as their ship caught fire and sank beneath the waves, without a single scratch on our own ship, the Stormcloud.

Don’t try to keg your former ally a second time.

After your first failed attempt, it’s generally not a good idea to try again. Especially if the first time failed so spectacularly. So if you’re really not wanting to join an alliance, grabbing a bunch of kegs and immediately charging at the guys who just sank you is always a good thing to do. Clearly, if the first attempt didn’t work, then maybe, if you do it again, the enemy will get confused and it will work.

In our case, no, it didn’t work for this random crew. They managed to grab three kegs and instantly charge towards us, attacking our broadside, just sending their ship into us while jumping off and trying to board. This didn’t work though since we were guarding the ladders and their ship was stupidly obvious. We managed to blow up all their kegs before they even got close, then we sank their ship.

But yeah, if you don’t want to join an alliance, trying to keg people a second time is a good way to go about it.

Don’t approach your former ally and ask for an alliance while also carrying a bunch of kegs.

If you are really, really desperate not to join an alliance, then the final thing you need to do is try and call on another crew to join their alliance, say that all the kegging attempts were an accident and that you want to make amends. Then, when the other crew (i.e. us) doesn’t accept your offer to join an alliance, you decide to try and keg them a third time. Especially since you’ve gone and grabbed a good five or so kegs in order to attempt this.

While they did manage to get a keg on board, they failed to do much damage, and the kegs on their own ship exploded in the process, causing them to sink a third time. They didn’t come back after that.

Actually joining an alliance.

I’m finishing this off with HOW to join an alliance. Because it’s not difficult but it’s not always intuitive either.

If you want to form an alliance, then you need to go to the top of your crow’s nest and change your flag to the Offer Alliance flag. If a friendly ship sails close by, they can then go to their own flag box on their crow’s nest and select the Join Alliance flag. This will put you both in an alliance. You can leave the alliance by going back to the flag box and selecting the Leave Alliance flag.

Either way, alliances are cool, but, like, maybe try and actually use them, you know?
