Mindlessly Murdering Things

You ever get one of those days where you just want to turn your brain off? Something seems a little skewed and you don’t know why? A good mood or bad mood can come along at any moment, and sometimes you just don’t want to think about anything. Other times though, you just want to do something simple and easy, like play a video game.

For me, my favourite thing to do is mindlessly murder things. Just grab a big gun and mow down some generic bad guys. While there are a lot of games where you can do this, my game of choice tends to be Warframe or Destiny 2. However, when it comes to mass slaughter, one is definitely better than the other.

I don’t like comparing, but…

I often try not to compare Destiny 2 with Warframe. Most of the similarities are only on the surface. As you dive deep into both games, sure, some things are still similar, but you can’t really make a direct comparison. After all, one game is a first person looter shooter, the other is a third person MMO-like thing.

However, when it comes to murdering things, I want to compare them anyway.

Destiny 2’s not brainless yet

If I need to de-stress myself, I tend to avoid Destiny 2. While there definitely power fantasies in Destiny 2, you can still die easily if you don’t pay attention. Even in the more open-world free-roam areas, a lot of enemies can get the drop on you if you’re not paying attention. Especially all the damn Creeper-like exploding entities.

There’s also always some sort of objective to do as well. Sure, some bounties are like “go kill 20 Fallen” or whatever, but most of the fireteam stuff is “kill stuff and do puzzles on your way to the boss”. And during strikes and the like, I have to concentrate on what I am doing, so I don’t die.

More simply put, I have to spend mental energy trying not to die, as there are plenty of things that can kill you.

Warframe has been brainless for a while

The power fantasies in Warframe are generally more fun for me. But it’s not just the fact that I am more decked out in Warframe. Overall, there are far more cannon-fodder enemies. Also, you have more choices of difficulty. In Destiny 2, everything has a set difficulty. You can somewhat toggle the difficulty of missions in Warframe by playing on different planets.

But the real reason is that, in Warframe, I always feel like there are more enemies. Steel Path content has even more enemies to murder. There’s just so much more to kill and slaughter, and I can continue slaughtering as long as I please. Endless missions like Survival spew tons of mobs at me, and only a handful of them can insta-gib me in one hit, unlike Destiny.

A skewed view

To be really honest though? I have a lot of bias here. I’ve spent over 4000 hours in Warframe. The time I’ve spent in Destiny doesn’t even compare. Of course I’m going to prefer the one game I know better than the other. So far though, I haven’t reached a point of mindless murder in Destiny 2. At the very least, not a consistent one.

If I just mindlessly want to murder things though, nothing beats a survival mission in Warframe. I can just turn my brain off and melee away, murdering whatever happens to be in front of me…
