Rest in Peace, Gnawing Hunger

The other day, I did something weird. I’d leaped into Destiny 2 to take part in a cheesy raid, and gone to my vault to get some new weapons. The Lorenz Driver I had needed upgrading, so I grabbed my last upgrade module and selected a weapon to infuse into it. This is a perfectly normal thing to do, after all, I have a lot of weapons. But I needed a higher level weapon to infuse into my Lorenz Driver before we could do this raid.

Somehow, in my confusion and exhaustion, I accidentally sacrificed the wrong weapon.

I really, really fucked up.

I accidentally infused my Masterwork Gnawing Hunger into my Lorenz Driver. I don’t know how, since it was always locked. But for some reason, I had somehow unlocked the Gnawing Hunter. Why? No idea. My whole recollection of the event was tragic enough to nearly bring me to tears. I wish I knew what was going on in my head, because I already had a gun I wanted to infuse into my Lorenz Driver. This actually ended up hurting more than I thought. Because I was under the impression that I had a spare (underleveled and not masterworked) Gnawing Hunger. I don’t have a backup one. Heck, I don’t really have a non-exotic auto rifle to take its place.

But in the mean time, I had a raid to help in. We were going to ‘cheese’ the last part of the Last Wish raid. This raid in the Dreaming City is a long, tedious one, but it does have cheat codes to teleport you to the boss. There was no time to cry over my lost weapon, we had a (really fugly) dragon to kill.

I had that gun for ages, from a very low light level.

Seriously, Gnawing Hunger is one of the first weapons when I first got into playing Destiny 2 properly. It came from an Umbral Engram, which I opened up back when Drifter used to decrypt these engrams. And it served me very well. Sure, there are many times that a gun is better, but Gnawing Hunger was always my backup gun. Especially after running out of Heavy or Special ammo.

It was also the second masterwork weapon I owned, following a grenade launcher I got in a quest. However, unlike the quest-given grenade launcher, I had made the Gnawing Hunger my own. I basically master-worked it myself. Even now, I don’t have that many masterwork weapons, and the Gnawing Hunger was my favourite.

All is not lost

Luckily, unlike other weapons I had, the Gnawing Hunger hasn’t been sunset. There’s a chance to find another one. Or so I thought. In one’s collections, you can see pretty much every weapon you’ve owned. In some cases, you can actually pay resources to recreate an item from your collection. I had hoped to get a Gnawing Hunger from my collections, but it turns out, I can’t.

Remaking a weapon from your collection only applies to weapons that don’t have randomized perks. The Gnawing Hunger has randomized perks (a lot of them) though, which means I can’t just remake it.

There are still two options. The first is to gamble with Umbral Engrams. I originally got my Gnawing Hunger from an Umbral Engram. While there is a way to turn a normal Umbral Engram into one with less options, it’s still gambling on quite a large pool of rewards.

The last option is to hope that Banshee or Xur might bring it along. If they do, I can pay a chunk of Legendary Shards to get a new one, which I’ll have to power up to reach other guns.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel

Unfortunately, now, all I can do is wait. While Banshee does often have weapons to buy, they’re on a random rotation. And it might be a long, long time before I see him bring in another Gnawing Hunger. Or, rather, a Gnawing Hunger with the perks I want.

But at there IS a chance that I can get a new one. It won’t ever be the same as my original Gnawing Hunger, but it will have to do.

Editor’s Note: Turns out I’m an idiot and Xur was selling one for legendary shards. Not the best roll but it’ll do for now.

RIP the Gnawing Hunger. I also get super sentimental about whatever early-game weapon i first clicked with, especially if there was any element of RNG/rarity to me obtaining it
