Locked In A Closet with A Bunch of Suits

It’s been three years since The Sacrifice came out in Warframe. While, for me, that seems somewhat recent, I’m pretty sure that most people feel like it was aaages ago. Time flies when you’re having fun, I guess. But there is something that troubles me about The Sacrifice. And it’s… a bit weird.

A quick heads up! This article contains massive spoilers for one of Warframe’s bigger quests. I’d recommend finishing The Sacrifice before reading this article!

Okay, to be fair, it WAS three years ago. Normally, most spoilers become unspoiled about a year afterwards. But because this quest is a major part of Warframe’s lore, it still does seem a bit mean to spoil things for people who came after me. I am very much a veteran player, after all.

Anyway, with that out of the way, I can talk about something that bothers me about the Sacrifice.

Excalibur Umbra and the Moon
Excalibur Umbra and the Moon

A living, feeling thing.

The Sacrifice is an unusual story because it involves a Warframe doing stuff on its own. Actually, I take that back. We’ve seen rogue Warframes twice. A Chroma appeared in the New Strange, and a Mesa was infested by Alad V. But we don’t know what really happened to those two. They died or disappeared and that was kinda it.

The Sacrifice on the other hand is all about one very specific Excalibur, a former Dax soldier who attempted to reveal Ballas’s treasonous plans. This poor, blighted soul was turned into a Warframe, forced to kill his own son and all-round generally has an awful time. We manage to help Umbra and assist him in getting a small hint of revenge.

Umbra is also particularly unique because Umbra functions WITHOUT a Tenno operator. He’s a living, breathing individual. But we kinda just treat him like another Warframe.

We just shove him into storage alongside the rest of our arsenal.

Umbra needs to be free.

It just seems so wrong that Umbra ends up in the same spot as all my other Warframes. Our Warframes aren’t really alive, and they certainly don’t talk much. Sure, Umbra doesn’t talk either, but he is conscious and mobile on his own. Whenever we don’t use Umbra, he is on his own. And since most people tend to swap frames occasionally, it’s possible that Umbra won’t see the light of day for weeks or months at a time.

Sure, the Helminth probably keeps Umbra fed or whatever, alongside other frames, but Umbra’s situation seems unfair. Clearly, we should allow Umbra to roam around as he pleases. Or at least let him stretch his legs a bit, on his own accord.

Where could we put him though?

Well, there are plenty of options. Our Orbiter is pretty large. And there is a whole room dedicated to decorations and simple, relaxing living. I’ve love to keep Umbra in that room, and he’d get a bit of peace and quiet for himself. But if you want to keep that space to yourself, we could always make room somewhere else. The Helmith room is probably too gross and triggering. And we’d have to make some adjustments to the Operator’s chamber.

However, there is one other place, a large space that Umbra can settle down in. And that place is our Railjack. Not only is there enough space that we could give to Umbra, but we could also keep Umbra involved and occupied. After all, we allow converted Liches and random Syndicate members on our Railjacks, so why can’t Umbra join them?

If anything, Umbra is a PERFECT addition to our Railjack crews. Especially since we will be fighting more and more Sentients. But in the mean time, we still need to give Umbra a place to relax.

Unfortunately, it’s been three years already. So I doubt we’ll get this any time soon…
