I’m Confused About All This Witch Queen Stuff

Normally, I don’t follow Destiny 2 that closely. While I have tried to enjoy Destiny 2, I find it hard to play regularly. There is a lot of grind in Destiny 2, but since I already have a game I grind hard in, I don’t really fancy another. That being said, I do keep an eye on new updates and stuff. After all, my brother plays Destiny 2 and he enjoys it a lot, telling me when all the cool new stuff is appearing. So when he informed me that Destiny 2 were doing a live stream and announcement that something cool was about to happen, I was intrigued.

Well, I was in for a surprise.

The Witch Queen announcement

Destiny 2’s developers, Bungie, have been hard at work on the next massive DLC. Savathûn, a powerful ruler over the Hive, has re-emerged as a massive, universe-wide threat. Somehow, Savathûn has managed to find a way to create her own versions of the players’ Guardians. She’s built herself a massive base, is resurrecting fallen minions at a rate of knots and is generally all-round a stupidly dangerous threat. Having our blessed Light turned against us is a huge step in a new and dangerous way is pretty amazing.

However, a lot of this did get leaked. But seeing it all laid out by Bungie has been pretty damn cool.

The New Season is also unveiled

Alongside this massive new threat, we also get to see what the new Season is for Destiny 2. Season of the Lost is a stepping stone towards the Witch Queen DLC, offering some backstory to the upcoming threat. And, like all new seasons, as soon as you start the game, you are dumped into a quest mission, giving you a nice background to the story. The starter quest is called Moon Cocoon, and is the very first step on a long path towards the Witch Queen.

But this intro quest confuses me.

Okay, so, the gist of the story is this: In the previous season, an idiot Guardian tried to banish a bunch of people to the realm where the Vex live. Instead, she accidentally allowed the Vex to invade the Last City. Thankfully, we manage to push back and win, but the idiot Guardian dies. Wanting answers, you and Saint-14 (probably the most badass Guardian of all) have been tasked with finding and catching Osiris, who may have also been responsible for the carnage.

So we chase after Osiris, who is hiding in the Dreaming City. When we do find him, Osiris is acting really weird, and we run into two other Dreaming City characters. Saint-14 explains the situation, then both us and Saint-14 suddenly shout out. Osiris disappears (off-screen, for some reason), and is transformed into a strange, purple cocoon.

It turns out, Osiris was Savathûn all along. And she’s… inside a purple gem thing, for some reason? Sure, Savathûn claims that her sister is trying to kill her, but, like, this is Savathûn we’re talking about. One of the most dangerous (human-shaped) entities around. One who certainly does not normally need our help.

Either way, Savathûn promises to give Osiris back, in exchange for helping her. We pick up the new season augment and that’s, well, pretty much it.

Is it me, or does no one really seem to care?

Okay, sure, Zavala and Ikora do express their anger over all of this. But aside from that, no one seems that bothered. They seemed more concerned about letting some Fallen guys into the city than the fact that a long-time ally, a fellow Guardian, has been Savathûn all along. Okay, sure, what we know out of character and in character are two separate things. Maybe, in-universe, we don’t know how powerful Savathûn is.

But I very much doubt that. We know who Savathûn is, we know she controls (parts of) the Hive and we are fully aware that she’s a trickster deity being. There’s a raid called Savathûn’s Song, for heaven’s sake. Really, we should have instantly attacked the second Osiris turned into the Queen of the Hive. But no, we’re… just helping her. Seriously, this makes no sense at all! Osiris was a wanted criminal at the time we catch up to him in the Dreaming City. Finding out that Savathûn is Osiris, that the same entity that allowed Vex into the Last City, the same queen of a faction that wants to kill us all.

I just don’t get this.

Unless it turns out that smashing Savathûn’s purple cocoon actually releases her with full power, I really don’t get why we’re even giving Savathûn the time of day. But what makes this even worse is the timing. I find it insanely weird that Bungie announce the big bad in the next massive DLC. Then, on the same fucking day, they introducing a new season where we are for some reason assisting the Witch Queen and star baddie of the new DLC.

Like, what? How does that even work? While I am interested in the Witch Queen DLC, the timing of all this new content just doesn’t sync up with what people in-universe know and don’t know.

At least I got to spend some time with Saint-14 though. He’s such a badass.
