The One Time I Willingly Played Crucible in Destiny 2

I normally hate PvP stuff in Destiny 2. I’ve mostly only ever played it when forced to. To get the Rat King exotic sidearm, I had to play Crucible for a bit and I absolutely hated it. Just like Conclave in Warframe, I avoid Crucible like a plague. And while Gambit is technically PvPvE, the PvE side of things is miserable and the PvP makes it worse.

However, as part of the Festival of the Lost event, a yearly Halloween thing, I kinda needed to play some PvP. Because, briefly, it was one of the best ways to get spectral pages.

What the fuck are those?

Oh, nothing much. Just a secondary currency alongside Festival of the Lost candy. But these mystery pages have a very low drop rate (2-3 per strike, for example) and we needed a lot of them. I, being an impatient person, decided I needed a better way to farm these damn pages. That was when a friend suggested we play Crucible, which would more likely finish more quickly.

As much as I hated that idea, for some reason, I accepted. Maybe, if I was lucky, my fireteam could carry me a little. At the very least, I’d be getting some more event currency.

Not Normal Crucible

Turns out though, we weren’t doing normal Crucible. There was an alternate, less serious mode around that week. I’d never actually thought about silly game modes before, but this one was right up my street. Well, it wasn’t, but it was better than normal crucible.

The Team Scorched game mode takes away everyone’s fancy armour and gear and weapons. All players are instead given a rocket launcher with infinite ammo. It was as if Soldier had gotten bored of Team Fortress 2 and shotguns and recruited a ton of new soldiers to blow up. We could also somewhat rocket jump, but Guardians have enough mobility options as it is. They don’t need more, especially in this silly game mode.

It was actually fun

What actually amazes me though was that, well, Scorched was a ton of fun. Two teams blowing the fuck out of each other. For once, I actually felt like I was on even ground.

Okay, to be fair, I really wasn’t on even ground. Like every other time I’ve played Crucible, I was at the bottom of the table with pretty much no kills and awful efficiency. But as we kept on playing, I managed to play a round where I got 4 kills. Which is more than I’ve ever gotten in Crucible.

In all honesty, I was 100% carried by the rest of my team. But it felt so nice, knowing that none of this mattered and we were all just chilling and having fun. And once we got enough spooky pages, we could then go and do the Haunted Lost Sector missions, to get yet more event currency.

Team Scorched. Six players being brave.

But then I did an amazing thing.

Our group ended up disbanding (due to time zones). But there was a slightly giddy feeling in my stomach. So I opened up the Director and clicked Crucible. I played a random match on my own. Willingly clicking on the play button for a PvP game mode. Did we win? No. But it was fun while we lasted. I even managed to get a few kills.

I’ve never willingly done that before, but here was a Crucible thing that I was kinda enjoying.

Unfortunately though, I only discovered the Scorched game mode on Sunday, and by Tuesday, it was gone, killed by the weekly reset. So I didn’t get much of a chance to play more.

Oh well. It’ll come back one day. And when it does come back, I’ll actually have some fun playing Crucible matches…
