Venom: Let There Be Carnage random review

The other day, I saw Venom: Let There Be Carnage at the cinema. Rather amusingly, I had never watched the first movie, but, like, it was Venom. I’ve read tons of comics with Venom in, so I already had a vague idea what was going on. That being said, I actually didn’t even need to see it. Let There Be Carnage doesn’t really need it.

Anyway here’s a random review of this movie.

Before I start., there may be spoilers! Read at your own risk!

The same old pattern of good guy fighting bad guy with same powers

Not gonna lie, the basic plot did follow Marvel tradition. Our protagonist has to fight a version of himself that is stronger or bigger or whatever. However, that didn’t really bother me, because that’s exactly what a Venom VS Carnage fight is. Right from the start., we’re going into a movie that does what it says on the tin. Anyone with a little knowledge about Spider-Man’s hall of villains probably know this already.

Although, at first, both Venom and Eddy do kinda seem like douche bags. It makes sense character-wise, and gives us a nice bit of drama. We get some nice character development from them though, and Tom Hardy does a good job. On a similar note, Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady was actually really good, better than I expected.

CGI fight in the dark

Unfortunately, Let There Be Carnage did have a bit of a fatal floor. The symbiote battles were mostly set in the dark, and it was hard to see. Although I do understand why, because, well, we have sci-fi goo breaking the shit out of anything. The darkness ends up covering for the fact that Venom and Carnage are kinda… I don’t want to say “CGI-y” but, well, they are massive, leaping piles of goo. That sort of thing is hard to animate.

That being said, I did like how both of them looked. They may have seemed a bit tacky and shiny, but the symbiotes both look how I expected them to look. The rest of the CGI was alright too.

Should have been rated 18

My biggest pet peeve though was that, well, it was rated 15. I genuinely think and 18 rating would have done a lot of good for the movie. After all, Carnage is killing tons of people in reckless ways. But there was not a lot of blood or gore. Heck, a lot of the killing was done off-screen and with hardly any blood.

An 18 rating would have allowed Carnage to do a LOT more damage and kill a lot more people. More importantly though, it would have made the differences between Venom and Carnage a lot more reasonable.

Short and to the point

Overall, I’d say that Let There Be Carnage was a good movie. It wasn’t a mind-blowing experience or anything like that. Let There Be Carnage is a quick little action movie that gets the job done. No, it’s not the best. But you’re not expecting the best thing ever.

If you want a short action movie that doesn’t require much thinking, then Venom: Let There Be Carnage will do the job.
