Sunshot

Occasionally on the Daily SPUF, we talk about video game weapons. Most of the time, there are multiple weapons featured in our articles. But sometimes, a weapon can get an article all of its own. Because I either like it that much, or I genuinely hated. Mostly the former.

Today, we’ll be looking at the Sunshot, one of the first Exotic Weapons I found in Destiny 2.

Boom

Now, normally, I’m not a fan of hand cannons and sidearms. Both have always felt somewhat weak to me, especially sidearms. They just don’t feel as hefty as a larger weapon. However, the Sunshot feels particularly good. Not only does it have a really cool texture on it and overall looks badass, but this hand canon feels like an actual hand cannon. It deals Solar damage and has explosive shots.

Basically, the gun is awesome.

Repeating Explosions

The best thing about the Sunshot though are the repeating chain reactions. Your shots with the Sunshot are always explosive, and have a good area of effect. It’s less useful versus enemies with brains. But with hordes of canon fodder, the Sunshot does an amazing job of clearing up. As long as there’s an enemy near the one you just shot, you’ll be able to keep the explosions going. The chain reactions of the Sunshot are genuinely amazing.

The Sunshot’s strength is tearing through a horde of weak enemies. Any of the melee canon fodder units work. As they swarm towards you, you can headshot a single guy and have the whole swarm blow up in unison. It also has a nice bonus of marking enemies. So you can shoot them too.

In PvP stuff, the Sunshot falls off a little, but it’s still a good gun. I can’t comment on it in PvP though since I hardly use it.

The Catalyst takes forever

Like most exotics, there’s still some extra things to do before you get the perfect weapon. Exotic Catalysts are basically mini challenges. Do this list of things and we make your gun better. The Sunshot also has a catalyst, and its task looks rather simple at first. The first task you need to do is get kills with the Sunshot. That’s perfectly simple. But the second task is to kill enemies via the Sunshot’s explosions. Again, seems somewhat simple, but you need to kill 1000 enemies via a chain reaction to finish it.

There are plenty of high-spawn areas to do this. The problem is that you’re often fighting other players for kills. So I guess it’s best to go out solo. Some guides recommend parts of raids, but there’s a simpler option. A great place to see the Sunshot in action is on the Moon. Or, rather, what’s left of it. The cyclic public bounties on the Moon spawn a ton of small, weak enemies, all of whom die in a spectacular fashion to the Sunshot.

The Sunshot Catalyst gives an already great gun even better stacts. It increases stability by 18 and range by 27. Both are great, since the Sunshot isn’t the most stable gun. The range is also a net positive as well. After all, more range for explosions is always good.

Finding it at random

The problem with the Sunshot though is that you can’t farm for it. Both the Sunshot and its Catalyst are world drops, and the chance of getting a Sunshot from Exotic Engrams is, well, random. All you can do is hope that an exotic randomly drops or something.

But the Sunshot is worth it.
