On Not Hurting Natah

A while back, I made some predictions about the New War. What I predicted was pretty basic, only focusing on the major details. However, somewhat worryingly, I was kinda… almost slightly correct with my predictions. I definitely wasn’t 100% accurate. But then again, the New War did throw a ton of curve balls at us. Especially at the end of the quest.

Spoilers ahead, just so you know.

I finally get to meet you without nearly being killed, Lotus!
“I finally get to meet you without nearly being killed, Lotus!” and then she is taken away. We were rather naive.

That being said, I want to talk about the one big thing I wrote in my prediction articles. Like most people, I was gearing up, readying myself for a massive battle. With all the promotional material, we assumed that we would be fighting Natah, the being that was formerly the Lotus. This was teased for a long, long time. And the longer we waited, the more clear we thought things were. After all, we had the short cinematics of what happened between Ballas and Natah. We had the promo teaser of Natah talking to her mother, saying she needs to “take their fire back”. And then we have the long, twisting ramble of Natah while we fight the Ropalolyst. Even the New War trailers teased us. Heck, the opening launcher for Warframe teased that we would be fighting Natah at some point!

After all of that, we were told that the fight was coming to us. And the being behind it all was Natah, working alongside her brother Erra. So we all got our best weapons, Warframes and Necramechs and then… didn’t really use them.

In fact, we only really fight Natah briefly. Most of the New War, Natah was stuck in a chair, weak and unable to do anything. But the way we see her? She’s not even in a Sentient shape. Somehow, Natah is now Eidolon-y. It’s supposed to be because Natah is weak and dying. But we also never see her in action as Natah. She doesn’t command over any Sentients, she doesn’t do much except, well, stand around, I guess. As for all of us and our Paracesis? The blades we crafted, specifically to kill the Sentients? To kill Natah? They got used against us.

But throughout the entirety of the New War, the option of killing her never came up. We never get a chance to confront Natah, call her out on what she did, all the carnage that happened because of her actions. In fact, Natah kinda gets out of all this for free, escaping all the damage she has done. She even gets the chance to still be Natah, the horrifying Sentient.

Now, am I annoyed that we didn’t get to kill the Lotus? Not really. What bothers me more is that we just let her get away with things, simply because she’s our ‘mother’. It’s never been clear just how much Natah did before, during and after the New War, and we probably won’t ever find out.

I suppose though, there is one good thing for Natah: she snapped out of her sickness and immediately tried tp stop Ballas from fucking with our sun. That is the reason we don’t kill her. And I suppose that’s enough to justify keeping Natah alive…

But there was also the secret code in Orphix Venom: “I AM DYING.”
More importantly, expecting to kill the Lotus/Natah was a conclusion that could only be arrived at by ignoring the thematic messages of every other quest in Warframe. It’s a story about family, empathy, and nothing being as it seems.

The “I AM DYING” message is a bit difficult to swallow when Natah was trying to kill us.
