Krakens Suck

I’ve been playing Sea of Thieves for a while now and I’ve been enjoying it a lot. However, not everything is perfect in this pirate game. Like most games, there’s always a flaw or two, some things that just aren’t likeable, and events that are seemingly random. As you sail, you can run into mermaid puzzle bubbles, find sunken ships or perhaps get attacked by a Megalodon.

And then we have Krakens.

Krakens suck.

Krakens are like Megalodons except more annoying and ready to waste a lot more of your time. You don’t even get to see most of them. They’re just a bunch of dumb tentacles that enjoy fucking things up, and spawn inky black water around your ship, that drags you to a crawl. And you ain’t going anywhere once it’s grabbed your ship.

Sure, there’s a tale in which you can see the whole Kraken, but that’s a scripted quest, not a random encounter. Most of the time, all you see are tentacles and ink.

The lottery but bad

How Krakens spawn though is literally through dumb luck. If there’s no world event, then a Kraken will spawn on one of the ships on the server you’re currently on. However, you can try and prevent a Kraken from spawning on you. Because Krakens are scared of coming too close to the shore, and won’t go near outposts at all.

So basically, it’s luck whether you get caught or not.

Luckily though, there is a solution. Sail to the nearest island and stay there, for as long as there’s no other world event going on. Once another world event appears, you’re good to go. But if you were, for example, fighting a skeleton fleet or even another player ship, then there’s kinda fuck all you can do. You just have to hope that you won’t be attacked.

I suppose, at least you can try and take a rowboat and row for safety, but a rowboat is kinda too small for more than 2 people.

Galleons have it worst

The thing is, Krakens are scaled up depending on what ship you have. If you’re on a sloop, you only have to defeat a couple of tentacles to escape. Meanwhile, Galleons have to take out pretty much every tentacle if you want the Kraken to fuck off. I believe that Kraken health also probably scales upward, depending on the size of your ship. Either way, Galleons have a lot more work to do if they don’t want to get pulled under.

No, I’m not salty that, on my first time steering a Galleon solo, that we got hit by a Kraken just after winning a cannon-ball-draining fight.

Ok, ok, maybe I am. Maybe I’m really pissed that, even with three of us bucketing (and one person busy being eaten), we couldn’t fix the holes in our ship in time. We just happened to be out at sea when the previous world event despawned.

But Krakens still suck, regardless of my salt. At least you can try and avoid them…
