Is Dynamax Just Mega Evolutions for Everyone?

The other day, I was looking up fake Pokemon, and also found myself looking at fake Mega Evolutions. Although fake Pokemon are generally quite cool, I find that fake Megas are even cooler. You’re taking a cool Pokemon and making it bigger and cooler by using a special crystal ball thingy. Well, most of the time. Sometimes even mediocre Pokemon get awesome upgrades.

They both work similarly

The rules are very similar. You can only Mega Evolve or Dynamax one Pokemon in a battle, afterwards you’re locked out of it. During your Mega Evolution or Dynamax, you get a shot of your Pokemon Mega Evolving or Dynamaxing, and then your Pokemon will attack. Your Pokemon will now be big and strong and will lay havoc upon your enemies. After the battle though (well, after three turns for Dynamax), your Pokemon returns to normal. The major difference is the duration, where Mega Pokemon last until knocked out or the battle ends, while Dynamax only lets you have three turns. In Pokemon GO, a Mega Evolution lasts 8 hours, but there’s no Dynamax raids. Yet.

There’s still exclusive forms

Of course, Charizard and Pikachu need their own special forms, otherwise they make sad noises and beg for more. So we have Gigantamax on top of Dynamax. And just like Mega Pokemon, we have Gigantamax Pokemon. Which are Pokemon with different, stronger and larger forms. And their own special G-Max moves instead of D-Max moves. So not only does Charizard have its own Mega Evolutions (IT GETS TWO FOR SOME REASON) but Charizard ALSO has a Gigantamax form. The favoritism between Charizard, Venusaur and Blastoise is pretty insane. Meanwhile, Venusaur and Blastoise had to wait for an upgraded game to get their Mega Evolutions. Oh and neither of them could Gigantamax before the Isle of Armour DLC. Unlike Charizard who is featured from the start.

Dynamaxing is however much more inclusive. The Pokemon that can Gigantamax are of course better, but any Pokemon can Dynamax if you want it to. You have to be quick though since it’s only three turns, and no backsies if you Dynamax the wrong Pokemon. Sadly though you can’t see Megas or Dynamaxed Pokemon outside of battle.

There was also Z-Moves but they were just one-off moves that required a short dance to activate.

Not that it matters

It doesn’t really matter what Dynamax is, since we probably won’t see Dynamax in Scarlet and Violet. Instead, we’re going to have… uh… some sort of… crystal hat thing? This effect is called the Terastal Phenomenon and it will boost Pokemon’s powers while also making them very sparkly, encasing the Pokemon in precious gems. It looks kinda cool and it gives Pokemon another type of element (the Tera type) and will probably be pretty strong. But in my eyes, all I see are tacky glass ornaments taken from a charity shop and then plonked onto a Pokemon’s head.

I’m not sure. It’s kinda weird. Either way, Mega Pokemon and Dynamax Pokemon will most likely become relics of the past, once Terastal stuff comes out in Scarlet and Violet.
