Medic Goes to Cyprus Comic Con 2023
It’s been a while since I went to any big event, let alone a comic con. The coronavirus kinda made it a lot harder to do in-person conventions, and while things have mostly cleared up now, there’s always a small worry that things could spike again.
Either way, here we are, at Cyprus Comic Con 2023. It’s been a long time, and it’s one of the few things where O get to go out in a costume, rather than boring old normal clothes. This year though, I have been insanely busy, especially since I spent August moving in to a new apartment and I spent September being sad and overworked. So I had to recycle a costume.
But this is a good thing. Because I finally get to dress up as my namesake, Medic!
Yep, I went dressed as the Medic, ins BLU flavour. And some people recognised me! Also with me was my brother, who used parts of an old costume to dress as RED Engineer. We also briefly ran into a BLU Scout! In fact, we had only just gotten our costumes on and someone tapped me on the back and said “cool costume”. So right from the start, I was feeling rather happy. In fact, I was quite impressed on how many people recognized us. A few people also wanted to take selfies with me, which was awesome. And, on a positive note, only two people thought I was a Ghostbuster. Which is a fair guess, because I do have what looks like a sucking-stuff-in weapon and a weird, rectangular backpack.
What’s the most amazing thing is that I actually saw another Medic! Someone came dressed as RED Medic, and I only just caught them, as we were leaving and they were arriving. Their costume was miles better than mine, but my costume was very much a cheap one, recycling used stuff. Amusingly, this RED Medic had a Kritzkrieg rather than a normal Medi Gun, which was also pretty awesome. We swapped names and left them to it, because we needed to leave, it was getting late and our feet were hurting from walking around all day. There was space to sit down, but very little space in the shade.
As for Cyprus Comic Con itself, it’s all pretty much the same. There are a lot more new places selling new things, but there was also a lot of the same. For example, a local shop called POW were doing mystery boxes for €25, and I like to think I got €25 worth of stuff. I got a nice t-shirt and mug out of it, at least. I also bought some key rings, one of them being for Team Instinct, my Pokemon GO team. I also bought a couple of key rings for my brother and his girlfriend. There wasn’t that much new stuff, and there felt like a lot less art stuff, it was all shuffled into two of the main halls rather than being mainly its own corner. I’d also say that the music was a tad… both too loud and not loud enough. The electronic stuff was plenty loud, but any vocals were kinda buried in all the noise. The Medieval corner was pretty neat as well, but that too needed more shade. The place just needs more shade in general.
I only went for the one day though. There wasn’t much that interested me in day 2. We ran into our friends that I play Pokemon GO with, and we chatted with them for a bit, they were only staying for one day as well. While sure, there was always the costume parade, I didn’t fancy waiting somewhere hot and sweaty, just so I could be on stage for like 30 seconds. Maybe next year we’ll take part, but we weren’t feeling it this year.
Next year though? I need to decide on what I want to dress as. This was my second time dressing as a TF2 character, so maybe next year I’ll try something else. I would like to try something draconic, but we’ll see how things go. But I had a lot of fun at Cyprus Comic Con, and I would love to do it all again. Maybe with a better costume…
