A Distinct Lack of Yellow in Sea of Thieves

Anyone who’s seen my Warframe articles knows that I normally use bright yellow on all my characters. Yellow is my favourite colour, it’s the colour of one of my main Phoviverse protagonists and I like to make sure that it’s everywhere. If I could, I would have made a yellow Bohrok, I do have a yellow head plate, but Bohrok limbs don’t come in yellow. In Sea of Thieves, I kinda wanted to continue my tradition of wearing yellow, but, well, I have like one option total. And it’s not even that yellow.

I realized that there was no yellow in Sea of Thieves when I made myself a new brig, named Arkay’s Fang. Currently, Arkay’s Fang is decked out in Reaper’s Bones cosmetics, because the Reapers are the closest thing we have to a death cult, which is fitting since the Phoviverse character Arkay is the god of death and decay. (And, unlike the Elder Scrolls deity of funeral rites and stuff, my Arkay is 1. actually good at his job and 2. actually alive, because most of the Divines in the Elder Scrolls series are deader than door knobs.) Anyway, sure, Reaper stuff is cool, it’s all white, red and black and it looks nice. But Arkay’s colours are yellow and black (with blue as a tertiary colour when available). However, there is only ONE single properly yellow hull, and it hasn’t been available since the Arena closed down three years ago. Which means I can’t ever get it. Ever.

Outside of that, there’s pretty much nothing. There’s a handful of hulls which have yellow on them as a tertiary colour, but they’re Merchant Alliance hulls and the yellow is kinda weird and sticks out and the main colour is sky blue. It’s nice, but it’s not what I’m looking for. I then went and checked the Pirate Emporium, willing to spend actual Ancient Coins on a hull for my ship, but, again, there was nothing. A LOT of nice red, black and gold looks, which do kinda fit the Reaper’s Bones Death God motif I like, but there was no yellow what so ever. Not even an off-yellow. Or an orange, for that matter. The closest I saw was green and, while I like green, it’s still not what I want.

Eventually, I gave in and just went back to the Reaper stuff, because it’s nice. I ended up spending my Ancient Coins on a couple of emotes and the Halo weapons pack. But the lack of yellow remains.

And it’s not just ships that lack yellow. Clothes lack yellow too. The most yellow you can easily get is the Grand Admiral Jacket which is black with a yellow trim and comes with a matching hat. There are a handful of items in a large number of colours, but even then, yellow is kinda missing. At least, the bright yellow I like. Shirts aren’t much better. Outside of the cropped shirt, the Grand Admiral Shirt (which, again, is black with a yellow trim) and the Redcoat Grand Admiral Shirt (which is white with a yellow neck tie), that’s pretty much it.

In fact, there’s only mainly ONE yellow jacket, and it was a prize for a competition during Sea of Thieves’ first week of release, released to a grand total of 4 people. And is thus impossible for 99.99% of the community to obtain. What makes this worse is that the set is called The Golden Banana but the jacket doesn’t even have any gold on it.

Me and my new hat
Me and my new hat. And me lacking any real yellow.

So, uh, yeah. In Sea of Thieves, I can’t be my normal yellow self. It’s actually slightly infuriating. I mean, on the plus side, I do have some of the best fashion sense on the high seas, but for now, I’ll just have to make do with Sarwan’s hat.
