Sparrows Make Me Both Sad and Happy
I like sparrows. In fact, I quite like birds in general. It boggles the mind that something like a sparrow is somehow related to dinosaurs. Well, not all of them, of course. What is also cool is going pretty fast. Which the little things do. Either way, sparrows are cool.
Not actual Sparrows
When it comes to Destiny 2, the names of items and gear are kinda… oddly human. And very much in English (by default) alongside the occasional Latin or Greek gibberish. Doesn’t normally bother me. But there’s one thing that really confuses me. Why are our little speedster vehicles called Sparrows? Our little hover bike things do hover and don’t touch the ground. I assume all the other names were taken or copyrighted? I say that, real life sparrows are hardy little creatures, despite their size. Still, you’d think that they would pick a name like Falcon or Eagle or something.
Honestly, I just think the name doesn’t fit. But it’s not going to change any time soon.
The Happy
Sparrows are fast. Really fast. Okay, not fast enough to escape massive mountain-eating drills, but they do help when it comes to going from A to B. Their speeds are varied, with Exotic Sparrows generally being the fastest.
On top of that, there are lots of cool-looking Sparrows as well. Normally, this sort of thing costs money, but if you check the Eververse shop weekly, there’s often an affordable one in the Bright Dust section. As you play along, you’ll also get Eververse engrams that have a chance to drop a Sparrow. A handful of quests also reward Sparrows as well, and there’s normally a Sparrow for events like Halloween and Christmas.
Speaking about Christmas actually reminds me of my own Sparrow. The Mirthmobile is the exact opposite of most other Sparrows. Not only is it small, but it’s also so silly-looking. It’s a little bit of a meme, if I am honest. But I fucking love it. Not only is it whimsical and small and puny, but my character looks so damn uncomfortable while using it.
Don’t ask why, I just love making my own character look miserable by doing stupid stuff with them.
The Sad
Sparrows are great. But they do have two downsides. While riding a Sparrow, you can’t really do anything else apart from drive around. I originally was under the impression that Sparrows at least had weapons, but it turns out they don’t. I find this kinda surprising because, on most Sparrows at least, there’s definitely space for a gun or two. Okay, maybe not on my Mirthmobile, but definitely on the front of your more standard Sparrows. Many Sparrows have plenty of space for even just a sidearm.
You know who DOES have guns on their bikes? The Fallen. Why can’t we have something like that?
That being said, guns on Sparrows might be a bit unnecessary. But if we can’t have guns on our Sparrows, we could have guns on us while riding on our Sparrows. Would be a nice little buff to sidearms, which don’t really get used that much.
The second reason is a bit simpler. You can’t really do cool tricks on a Sparrow. Sure, you can roll a little but it’s rarely needed. Most of the time, we’re too busy However, when it comes to tricks, the Mirthmobile wins once again. If you summon the Mirthmobile in midair over a large enough fall, you can do some sick flips. With a big enough drop, you will constantly do backflips until you hit solid ground. It’s a 50/50 chance that you won’t get thrown off the Mirthmobile though. And you might take some collision damage.
That being said, we don’t see much from Sparrows.
Thing is, Sparrows have one use and they do it well. They get you to your destination quicker than by just walking. But not as fast as using fast travel. On the plus side, at least our Sparrows look awesome. There really is a speedster for everyone…
