The Differences Between Greek and Cypriot Greek

Today is Cyprus’s independence day, the day where the Republic of Cyprus became its own country. Really, doing so has been nothing but trouble and pain and suffering, mainly because Greece and Turkey keep on pulling and tugging at Cyprus, wanting it to become part of their territories. It’s a depressing tale that ends with the island nation being split in two, across the capital city of Nicosia, with no real way of ever being reunited. The thing is, Cypriots, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, are actually very different to normal Greeks and normal Turks. There are distinctly different… [Continue Reading]

Windows and Its Damned Forced Actions

Windows is an asshole. Windows 10 in particular is an asshole. To the point that I wish we could all just go back to Windows XP or whatever. But it’s not just any asshole. It’s an asshole that does things without asking you about it. While I am writing this article, I am supposed to be working. I have a bunch of stuff that needs doing, from website updates to artwork for labels and swing tickets. Right now, I can’t do any of that. Why? Because I had the audacity to leave a particular external hard drive plugged into my… [Continue Reading]

Not a Borderlands 3 Review

If you’ve ever wondered why the Daily SPUF doesn’t do reviews of newly released games, well, there’s three reasons: firstly, I am not very fast when it comes to games, so I can’t complete them quickly enough to give an overall review of games; secondly, there are already a billion people doing the same thing with new games; and thirdly, we don’t get any free game codes so any brand new games I want to play come out of my pocket (just like the hosting and domain name for the Daily SPUF). Or, in the case of Borderlands 3, my… [Continue Reading]

On Never Streaming

I’ve always kinda wanted to stream. Whether it be streaming video games or doing art, the idea of showing what you are doing, recording your actions and people wandering in and saying hi and talking to you all sound very nice. You end up making friends and maybe even building a community. Heck, you don’t even need to have anyone watching your streams, you can just stream yourself playing games and talking to some guy in the background in Spanish, not caring that no one is actually there, doing a 30 minute survival mission with three squad mates that are… [Continue Reading]

A Strange Kubrow

It had been a while since Volt had interacted with others. Most of the missions he had done, he had set off on his own, finished the mission and returned to his ship, only to rush off, on his own, to another mission. Even more difficult tasks, like half-hour survival missions and defending cryopods against waves of enemies, all of that, he had done alone. Aside from that Hydralyst hunt, but that was a story for another time. Speaking of that Hydralyst hunt, that was what snapped Volt back into Tenno society. While wandering around in Cetus, trying to decide… [Continue Reading]

Running Out of Steam

It turns out, we missed two milestones here on the Daily SPUF and I didn’t even notice. The 2200th and 2300th articles whizzed by and I was completely oblivious to it all, and now we’re closing in on 2400 articles. In fact, the 2400th article is only a few days away and I don’t have anything prepared. I don’t even have any plans for a 2500th article aside from writing about it. Of course you readers were all oblivious to it all as well because the only thing that says how many published articles we have is on the admin… [Continue Reading]

Behind That Other Username – A Look at Retvik

Some of you with a keen eye might have noticed that I only really use the name Medic here on the Daily SPUF. These days, I don’t play Team Fortress 2 any more and I’ve become ill-fitting of such a username as I spend more and more time doing anything but healing people in video games. On Steam and Discord, where you can have any username you want, I use the name Arkay, based on the protagonist of the Phoviverse. Old accounts made before I became known as Medic are often called Phovos. But nowadays, I’ve been using the name… [Continue Reading]

Medic, BSc

You might have noticed that yesterday I was talking about the Open University and how I studied with them. It might in fact have seemed a little suspicious, since this was something I had been doing on weekends and Wednesdays for the last 7 years, and I’d only started talking about it this year, both in yesterday’s article and an article a while back talking about an Open University course about web and mobile technologies. Well, as of today, I have a BSc Open Degree with honours. Which means I can stick BSc behind my real name. Actually, I found… [Continue Reading]

On Studying with the Open University

For the past seven or so years, I have been studying with the UK’s Open University, working on a degree. I’ve been studying part time for the entirety of those seven years, while also working somewhat full time, switching to completely full time work in August during the school break. It’s been a pretty good experience that has taken up a large chunk of my recent life, so I think it’s definitely worth talking about. The Open University offers distance learning. It’s the same as a normal university except you don’t go into campus or anything, you study from home,… [Continue Reading]

On Spam Comments

As I logged in earlier to write an article, I was greeted with a pretty normal message from Akismet, the free WordPress plugin that makes sure most spam comments just get insta-deleted. Today’s one was somewhat special though. Akismet has protected your site from 22,000 spam comments already. There are 194 comments in your spam queue right now. That’s a lot of comments. Granted, that’s 22,000 comments in over 5 years of Daily SPUF content but that is still a LOT of comments. And I haven’t gotten around to deleting the spam queue in a bit. The content of most… [Continue Reading]
