Do you remember your first life?

Medic: My first life in Team Fortress 2 was insanely dull. After spending a tad too long working out how to use the server browser, I found myself in a PL_Goldrush server. It wasn’t anything special, just 23 other people fighting over a damn stationary cart. I decided to start off with Scout, as he was the first class going left to right. So logic dictated that I picked him first. BLU were most of the way through the map. I spawned and switched through all of my weapons, deciding to keep my scattergun out since it was the biggest… [Continue Reading]

aabicus’ First Time in Warframe

As mentioned in this article, a few weeks ago Medic and I tried an experiment where we played a free game of each other’s choice, in the hopes of expanding our horizons. Medic played Planetside 2 with me and I played Warframe with her. The conclusion? She didn’t like her new game very much and I unfortunately have to say the same. 🙁 I really, really wanted to like it, which is the weirdest thing. I’ve loved games that are decidedly worse. I can’t even point to anything in particular the game did wrong, instead I’ve just got this laundry list of positives. The… [Continue Reading]

The Nexus Challenge: To Play or Not to Play

Week 3 of the second Nexus Challenge is in full swing, so if you were playing exclusively to score the sweet new DVa skin, now is the time to decide if you’re going to cut and run or keep grinding those games to get ten Overwatch loot boxes next week. An easy enough question for MOBA fans who enjoy the Heroes of the Storm gameplay, but personally I haven’t found it really singing to me, mostly because I have no appetite for MOBAs. This article is for people like me who want to make the HotS experience as manageable as possible. First… [Continue Reading]

Update the Damn Tutorials

Tutorials are great. I like games with tutorials that help explain things. The best sort of tutorials are ones which make hints pop up and fit with the rest of the game, but you have the option to turn off the hints in your options menu. Games with shit tutorials will put me right off, like Warframe originally did. Team Fortress 2 and its tutorials though are… lacking, to say the least. Well, the Soldier tutorial isn’t THAT awful. It covers the barest of basics of the game – movement, jumping, switching weapons and shooting, before putting you in a… [Continue Reading]

Medic’s First Time in Planetside 2

You ever get that feeling where you’re supposed to be doing something, like attacking the objective, but aren’t? Or are doing it in a way that totally isn’t helpful? Or are completely lost and supposed to be doing something? Well, that’s how I feel about Planetside 2. Before we start, I joined the purple guys. Their space suits looked cooler. And I have to agree with aabicus, their butts are nicer too. Of course, I decided to play the tutorial. Which kinda made sense, I think. Aabicus, the resident person who plays Planetside 2, decided to bring me along into… [Continue Reading]

Overwatch, a few tips to new players

This article, as the title implies is going to be more of a guide than an article. If you feel like you already know how to play Overwatch really well than you may not need to read this. 1. Bastion (or whoever) is not overpowered. This is something I feel new players in Overwatch complain about for the same reason TF2 players complain about things like Phlog Pyros. Bastion for example is really good against uncoordinated, disorganized and generally newbie teams but is bad against experienced players. Mei is a total bitch and Roadhog’s hook is awful. But sometimes there… [Continue Reading]

On Sounding Like an Idiot while Explaining Things

So the other day, I helped aabicus complete Vor’s Prize, the tutorial quest of Warframe. We played for about three hours, getting aabicus to Mastery Rank 1 and unlocking Venus as a place he can visit. From what I heard, aabicus enjoyed himself, and as I thought, he very much liked the game’s mobility, accessible to all Warframes no matter what you use. But as I slowly explained everything, I realised how 1. I had never noticed some things and 2. I sounded like an idiot when I thought about what I had just said. On the not-noticing side of… [Continue Reading]

Tips for New Warframe Players

At the rate we’re going with Warframe articles, I’m tempted to rename the Daily SPUF to the Daily Mag, the Daily Volt or something equally stupid. But as I learn more about Warframe, I feel I need to pass my information on to new players, the same way older players have helped me out. So here’s a bunch of random tips for you all. A quick note, there’s an updated version of this article here! Ideally, the best tip is to have loads of Warframe buddies who will help you farm stuff, but not everyone has that. Early Choices As… [Continue Reading]

Your first TF2 games

I was going through my unfinished articles. I hate all of them. But one of them is a gigantic, unfinished guide on everything you need to know about being a newbie to TF2. One day, I do plan on finishing that (when Competitive Matchmaking leaves beta, I guess), but for now, I’ll work on it occasionally. But for now, let’s think about those first few games of yours. The ideal first few games would be quite simple. You play the tutorial for Soldier, you play the second part with the bots, then maybe you play a training game with easy… [Continue Reading]

First Experiences playing Payday: The Heist

One of aabicus’s favourite games is Payday: The Heist. He’s been pestering me for a while to get it and play it, and finally, one month later, in a spur of the moment thing, I find myself abruptly thrown into my first heist. While aabicus is streaming. Cue me asking lots of questions. But really, apart from asking what’s going on, Payday: The Heist is a lot, lot simpler than the sequel. All you do is choose weapons, a bag, a perk and some cosmetic stuff. Then you start the game and go on a big heist. Our first heist… [Continue Reading]
