A Random Wrestling Article

I have always kinda liked wrestling. While most people just shrug it off as nothing but a fancy show, that doesn’t mean that wrestling is all bad. If anything, I think it’s more of an acquired taste. And that’s okay, because not everything is geared towards everyone. If you don’t like wrestling, you can always watch something else.

There is definitely some nuance when it comes to wrestling. And some storytelling. And a lot of acting. It takes genuine skill though to throw someone into a table without killing them. The fancier matches are fun, but so are the normal matches. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of ways someone can hurt themselves. While things have been improving a tad, wrestling is still very much a dangerous drop. One mistake and you can end up broken or even maybe dead.

I’m not really fussed about the stories

I’m just watching so I can see the fights. The story arcs don’t interest me at all. On top of that, before big matches, we always get a recap of why two people are fighting each other. Sometimes it’s just for a title or a belt. Occasionally a briefcase full of money. At other times, you get stories about family blood lines or between various tag team factions or whatever.

The stories aren’t even that subtle either. Then again, I suppose, after all these years, it must be tricky to keep on coming up with something new.

The lucky one

I suppose I actually have quite a unique perspective here. Rarely do I ever watch any wrestling on my own. The only times I do find myself watching beefy guys hitting each other is when my brother suggests we watch some wrestling. In the mean time, brother has watched a lot of wrestling himself, and he trims out the shit bits. Basically, my brother works as a curator of wrestling matches, and shows me the good stuff. In fact, brother watches multiple wrestling shows. It’s not just WWE any more, it’s also NXT and AWE and all that.

And brother genuinely does a great job at curating wrestling matches. I’d call him a die-hard fan, but he isn’t really. Because, according to him, WWE Raw is unwatchable and there are plenty of bad matches as well. Brother is very knowledgeable when he comes to wrestling, but there is plenty of stupidity and cringe that he skips out on for his own entertainment.

Rather annoyingly though, after calling my brother a nerd on a picture about wrestling, Facebook has decided that I love wrestling. To the point that most of my Facebook feed is wrestling.

Walter VS Dragunov

The best fights I’ve seen though, they’re not your standard wrestlers. Sure, it’s fun to watch the famous ones fight, but sometimes the newer guys can be insanely surprising. Out of all the shows, I’d sat I like NXT the most, mostly because they’re all vaguely new and refreshing. Still won’t watch wrestling on my own accord.

Anyway, I’m getting distracted. The two matches that I watched and genuinely enjoyed featured the same two people. Walter VS Dragunov is very much a David VS Goliath fight. The first time they fought, the hulking Walter beat the shit out of Dragunov. For their rematch though, Dragunov bounced around like a bullet and got Walter tap out. Both these matches were fucking awesome, and they looked genuine. At the end of both matches, both wrestlers were exhausted.

It’s not all like that though.

While the Walter VS Dragunov matches were excellent, that sort of fight is actually pretty rare. Most of it, according my brother, is either meh or shit, with the odd stand-out match.

At the end of the day, I’m glad brother enjoys wrestling, and I’m also thankful for the curated good stuff he shows me. Still not going to watch it on my own, though.
