Destiny 2’s RNG Leveling Up Process

I’ll be honest, while I do like Destiny 2, I find it really hard to play on my own. My Light Level is rather low and I don’t have particularly good luck when it comes to leveling up. While I can sorta do alright in normal Strikes and the like, Destiny 2 is not a game I feel like I can play solo. It doesn’t help that playing Destiny 2 kinda feels like a chore. But there is something that bothers me a little bit more than just needing to get good.

I’m not 100% sure but it seems that leveling up is pretty simple.

Okay, so, you get random drops all over the place. Items with numbers on them. Most of these are blue and occasionally purple, rarely gold. You get either armour or weapon drops, and they do kinda drop from anywhere. As you start out, doing quests and the like,

What I don’t get is the progression. You kinda just have to hope that you get a drop that is higher than what you already have. Because of this, I often found myself just using whatever the highest number was, particularly for guns. And because I’m constantly swapping guns and armour, I don’t have the resources to properly upgrade and mod my guns and armour.

It all slows down

But then you reach a point where leveling up slows down. Instead of mostly just picking stuff up off the floor or opening chests, you need to do various tasks for Pinnacle and Powerful Rewards. Both Powerful and Pinnacle rewards are guaranteed to give you a weapon or armour piece of a higher level. But these generally require doing more than just bounties. There are a bunch of different tasks all around the solar system, and they can be difficult. While you’re at it though, you want to always have your highest level armour or weapon in your inventory, in the hopes that you’ll get something higher than that while you play.

On the other hand, some aren’t so bad, but you need to play PvP. While it is tempting to just go and lose quickly in Gambit matches, that’s not really in the spirit of the game. Maybe I’d be a higher light level if I did do PvP stuff, but I don’t find it enjoyable. And why would I play something I don’t enjoy?

For everyone else though, just doing 3 matches is fine. The PvP bounties on the other hand are not fun at all. Mostly because they’re kinda random too. There’s no way I’d be able to defeat enemy guardians and the like.

Literally RNG

This is the thing that bothers me the most. Even if you do go after powerful and pinnacle rewards, what you get is completely random. The only thing that helps are those damn little fusion cubes. They let you transfer the power level of one item into another, destroying it in the process. But the cubes cost money and legendary shards to obtain, often in high amounts. So a newer player can’t really access them.

On the plus side though, there is plenty to do. The amount of daily and weekly challenges are mostly enjoyable, and pretty much everything you do contributes at least a little bit towards a higher Light Level.

At least, it seems, there’s more than enough to keep me occupied for now. But when I reach the cap on normal gear, I think I’m going to struggle. Especially as I try and rank up gear I already have…
