A Pirate Game With Not Many Pirate Clothes

There’s something odd about Sea of Thieves and its cosmetics. A huge part of the game is to go on adventures and quests, getting rich and doing pirate-y things. All of this gets you plenty of gold, which you can then spend on cosmetics. And, bloody hell, there are a LOT of cosmetics. Not just clothing, there are skins and sets for all your tools, weapons and companions as well.

But we are lacking in normal pirate gear. You know, the striped shirts, the bandanas, the more basic clothes. What you’d see in kids TV shows. There are some pieces of clothing that do look a bit more pirate-y, but I find much of my gear is too… captain-y. No matter what I wear, I’m always the captain of my ship. A smart jacket, a warm vest underneath and some decent shoes. Most pirates in Sea of Thieves actually look quite regal and well-dressed. Sure, you’ll run into the occasional murder hobo with his curse-covered chest hanging out, but I’d say the majority of people look like a pirate captain rather than a normal pirate.

And that’s all on top of the crazy sets in bright pinks and greens. There are many, many cosmetics that go way beyond pirates. Some sets look like they are ripped from Fortnite, while others are recoloured in all sorts of different ways, and not in muted browns or blacks. A lot of cosmetics just don’t match together. Just look at things like the parrot, crab and kraken sets. Mostly brightly coloured, but also inexplicably not really in the colours of actual parrots, crabs or krakens. You also have a lot of glowing clothing, because why not? Some glowy thingies aren’t too bad, like the feather on a hat. Others though have way, way too much, and look more like a glow stick than anything resembling a pirate. Or a human. Costumes are no better, in fact, when it comes to looking like a pirate, costumes are probably worse.

That being said, there are some cosmetics that are more for the average pirate. But they all come in weird off-colours. Olive green, salmon pink, dirty white. These cosmetics don’t go with anything else though. Which renders them mostly pointless. Sure, I want more pirate clothing, but it’s got to match with other clothes, otherwise I just look weird. Heck, I’d say that the starter sailor gear you begin with is as close to normal pirates as we get.

The biggest thing though is that we have absolutely no jewelry, aside from one piece costumes. That means no rings, no necklaces, no earrings, nothing! Considering how much gold we hoard in Sea of Thieves, the fact that we wear pretty much no gold or silver or anything is insane. Even just some gold rings could go a long way. And because it’s a pirate game, you can get away with heavy gold chains and bangles and stuff.

At the end of the day, there are a LOT of cosmetics and a ton of choice when it comes to how you look in the Sea of Thieves. But a lot of cosmetics are a little too clean and not pirate-y enough for my liking.
